Reconstruction:Proto-Finnic/uros
Proto-Finnic
editEtymology
editDisputed, but cognate with Proto-Samic *orēs. Traditionally held to be a derivation of Proto-Finno-Ugric *urɜ (whence Hungarian úr, but note that it also has alternative etymologies). LÄGLOS however supports an alternative etymology by Hofstra, which instead posits a borrowing from Proto-Germanic *ūraz (“aurochs”), in which case the original meaning must have been "male animal".
