editローマ (“Rome, Roman”) + 字 (“character”).
Note: There is no ン ("n") in ローマ字 • (rōmaji) . ローマ is borrowed from Portuguese. Compare however ローマン体 (“roman type”), which uses ローマン; borrowed from English.
