Etymology

Proto-Slavic *vъz-, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *uź-. Cognate with Lithuanian (within, instead of, in return for), Latvian uz (on, to). Further etymology disputed. Compare also воз- (voz-), a borrowing from Old Church Slavonic.
