Etymology

From an onomatopoeic element (cf. Proto-Slavic *bьltati (to babble, to dangle) whence doublet бълта́я (bǎltája)), possibly with influence from a grammatical verb referring to “roaming” (cf. Proto-Slavic *blǫkati, *blǫtiti (to rove, to wander) whence Serbo-Croatian блу́тити).
