Bulmer
editMany thanks - Kenneth Bulmer
editMany thanks for your work on the Kenneth Bulmer page. I only knew of Bulmer as "Adam Hardy", having read several of his "Fox" series as a kid. I never knew he wrote SF, which is weird because I was (and still am) an SF nut and you'd think if I liked SF and also liked the Fox series (set in the British Navy at war in 1795-1805) then I'd have gone mad for Bulmer's SF. But growing up in rural South Australia we were lucky to see more than one book in any series, let alone books across several series and across several psedonyms.
The breadth and volume of Bulmer's output is simply staggering. I'm just sad that I only figured out who "Adam Hardy" was merely two years after Bulmer's death :-( --Ossipewsk 00:16, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
- You're welcome. I first encountered Bulmer as "Alan Burt Akers," author of the Dray Prescot books. I'm not sure I've actually read a non-pseudonymous Bulmer novel even yet! It was kind of sad to learn that he passed away soon after I created the article. BPK 06:09, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

editBibliography
editThank you for helping out with my new Edgar Rice Burroughs bibliography article. I see you are active in ERB articles. Please join the discussion over at my talk about how to improve it, especially as it pertains to the book you added. Thanks. Jmj713 (talk) 04:57, 28 May 2011 (UTC)
I recently reverted your piping of links at the Jane disambiguation page - the Manual of Style for disambig pages says to never pipe those links except where necessary, so that it's more transparent to the reader. Happy editing, -- stillnotelf is invisible 13:42, 25 April 2006 (UTC)
Hi, BPK2! As a fan of the Edgar Rice Burroughs Barsoom series from my college days (25+ years ago), having recently decided to "renew my acquaintance" with these books, it was fun to come across your relatively new Dejah Thoris article here on Wikipedia while just doing some casual searching (think of a topic that is of interest to me and see if there's an article on it :) I've added a little to the article in terms of categorization.
It looks like you've done a lot on the Burroughs series'. Keep up the good work. Cheers, Lini 05:50, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
- In finnish scifi-fan magazine "Portti" was once in 90's an article titled "The Bosom of Dejah Thoris". Because ERB describes DT of having remacable bosom, the article asked how is it possible? The martians do not breastfeed their egg-born children, so what's the use? Also same born-from-egg makes the navel unnecessary, however most Barsoom-comix and painters (like Frazetta) draws to their barsoom-caracters a navel. John Carter excluded - an earthman. Have these been discussed anywhere? --RicHard-59 (talk) 15:52, 23 September 2009 (UTC)
- While there's little point in trying to make sense of Burroughs' extraterrestrial biology, since he has earthlings interfertile with the presumed alien humanoid species of Mars and the Moon, his Martians are evidently mammals and so presumably do breastfeed their egg-born children. An imperfect Earthly analog would be the platypus, which is both egg-laying and milk-secreting (although not possessed of actual nipples, I believe). I'm not sure Burroughs ever made any particular note of whether his Martians had navels, though most commentators assume with you that as egg-layers they did not. Yes, the whole matter has been discussed elsewhere, notably by science fiction author L. Sprague de Camp, who devoted some thought to the issue of Burroughs' biological inconsistencies. He himself, in creating his Barsoom-inspired planet Krishna, made its natives mammalian breast-feeding egg-layers (though not interfertile with earthlings). BPK (talk) 16:36, 23 September 2009 (UTC)
Tarzan Films
editHi, glad to see another fan of the movies has been creating articles. I've done quite a few myself recently, including all three of Mike Henry's. Hey, I was planning to do articles on Buster Crabbe's "Tarzan the Fearless" and Glenn Morris' "Tarzan's Revenge" in the next couple days. I wanted to get with you and make sure I didn't step on your toes in case you were planning to do them. Let me know. Thanks. Sir Rhosis (talk) 07:36, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
- I went ahead and created the articles. Again, hope you weren't planning to. Sir Rhosis (talk) 12:06, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
- Nope, no problem. Will be interested in reading the articles. Thanks for checking. BPK (talk) 18:09, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
- Hi, me again. I'm getting ready to do the article for Tarzan and the Huntress, so by the time you're up and read this, hopefully that link won't be red. Wanted to run a couple things by you. One: I'm considering writing an article for the cheapie 1999 Sony Wonder animated film called "Tarzan of the Apes." Yes, it was cheesy and has no voice credits and would be a skimpy article, BUT it was made with ERB Inc.'s permission and is an "official" release, just like the other animated Tarzan films. Would you consider putting it in your Tarzan film box if I do the article? Two, have you ever considered doing a film box (I'm talking about that big blue box you made and attached to all the Tarzan film articles, in case my inaccurate language may confuse you) for the various Tarzan TV shows. There'd be the Ely series, the "Lord of the Jungle" Saturday morning series, the Joe Lara Tarzan in Manhattan telefilm, the Tarzan the ecologist series with the tick mark over the second "a", the Joe Lara 1996 "Epic Adventures" series and finally the early 2000s animated series based on the Disney film. Just thought it might be something you would like to do. I could give it a go if you don't want to, but I'm fairly slow at these things -- whenever I create a film article, I just copy and paste an old one into the new article's blank box and go through and change the names, dates, casts, plot, etc., by hand. Anyway, I enjoy your articles. Your plots synopses are so much better than mine -- I just put enough in there to get by with, meaning to expand them someday. Best to you. Sir Rhosis (talk) 09:48, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
- Hi, Sir R. To answer your questions in turn:
1. Yes, it does sound like the Sony Wonder film ought to be in the film box. If you notify me when the article is done, I will see to it.
2. I think I will leave the box on the TV shows to someone more knowledgable on them; if you want to do one, it's fine with me.
Thanks for the kind comments. When I've done Tarzan film articles I've usually looked for information on the films on the net, starting with the IMDb, gone through all the plot descriptions, and written a new one based on all the relevent material. I may go back and give similar treatment to some of the articles others have created where the plot descriptions are skimpy.
BPK (talk) 13:36, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
- Hi, Sir R. To answer your questions in turn:
- As promised here is my review of the Sony Wonder animated film: Tarzan of the Apes. Sir Rhosis (talk) 17:24, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
- Okay, I've added it to the film box, and also corrected the preceded by/followed by links in Tarzan and the Lost City and Tarzan to take it into account. BPK (talk) 18:12, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
Cheeta
editThanks for the help on the Cheeta page! I know you put a lot of work into splitting the Cheeta article out to the Jiggs page, so sorry for undoing a lot of your work! The two articles really weren't working in that format, lots of duplicate information and lots of confusing and contradictory information. I think it's best that Cheeta remains the sole article so that all effort goes to one place. Cheers, Jack (talk) 16:08, 16 January 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, most of what you say is definitely valid, though I've reinstated a shorter Jiggs article, as the original Jiggs is notable in his own right as originator of the Cheeta role. I've kept some of the material on the later Jiggses there, though perhaps it should be cut down further. I agree that the material on Gentry's Cheeta hoax goes better in the Cheeta article, and have revised the material moved there to make it fit that context better. I originally separated the Jiggs and hoax material from the Cheeta article when it became evident as a result of Rosen's investigations that the chimp the article was then primarily about (Cheeta/Jiggs IV) had never actually been Cheeta, and that for the Cheeta article to have any validity it needed to be about the character, not the alleged portrayer. Accordingly, I also at that time brought together all the material I could find about the actual portrayers to augment the Cheeta article. BPK (talk) 16:18, 16 January 2013 (UTC)
- I will remove the Other Gentry chimpanzees associated with the Cheeta role section from the Jiggs article, as it is specifically about the first Jiggs. Still I don't think there is enough information remaining (two or three paragraphs, and all of it duplicated from Cheeta) to merit its own article. Jack (talk) 16:28, 16 January 2013 (UTC)

Hello...I wonder at You, I can explain that she has cancelled from me and why? In fact, Björn Nyberg and L. Sprague de Camp changed the title from ′'Conan the Avenger. Thanks. --Angelo.1961 (alias Big Beast) 14:00, 20 August 2013 (UTC)
- Conan the Avenger is a collection containing the novel The Return of Conan by Nyberg and de Camp and part 2 of "The Hyborian Age" by Howard. The title of The Return of Conan was not changed when it was included in the collection: the table of contents for the book lists it and the Howard piece under their original titles. The Return of Conan is therefore not "also known" as Conan the Avenger, and it is not correct to say so. BPK (talk) 14:51, 20 August 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for brining a voice of reason to that dispute. Oniononion (talk) 16:42, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks, I try. The sound of grinding axes was getting a bit loud—speaking as a person not wholly innocent from grinding axes myself. My feeling is that when all you have is one account of events in opposition to another without proof of which is correct (if indeed either is completely correct), it's better to present both accounts than to annoint one as the gospel. It's also helpful to remember that different witnesses can interpret the same events in quite different ways. When there's room for disagreement we ought not to do too much interpeting... Lovecraft: A Biography
editFirst of all, Wow! (after seeing your user page) and thank you (after seeing your user page) for all your work on some of the greatest authors and books. Very nice. I came by to ask if you are sure about the name H. P. Lovecraft: a Biography with the small 'a'. Book covers and other sources seem to have the capital 'A', but even some of the listings at Abebooks have the smaller version. Both inquisitive and interested if there's a story behind that on the author's end. Again, thank you for your 'stuff'. Randy Kryn 12:38 15 February, 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Randy. Thanks for the appreciation. From a cursory check of sources it does indeed look like I might have made an error in lowercasing the "a." I'll have a chance to check some more definitive references on Tuesday, and if they also confirm your observation I'll fix the article. It would be better just to check the title page of the book (bibliographically considered more definitive than the cover), but I don't have access to a copy at the moment. That I should be able to check Tuesday, too. Anyway, thank you for pointing out this possible (likely?) error. I'll definitely look into it. 03:03, 16 February 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks. As I mentioned, some Abebooks listings list it as a lowercase 'a' so you probably had something in mind when you placed it in lower-case. Maybe it's used as an alternate name or is the correct name and most people miss it. A good friend of mine is very active in the Edgar Rice Burroughs groups, goes to their yearly dum-dums, and I'll mention your work on Burroughs to him (maybe it will nudge him and others in their group to add to the Burroughs pages here, which I've urged him to do). I actually spoke on Burroughs, and gave a tour of some of his homes, at the 1980 World Science Fiction Convention (I think it was '80). Haven't thought of that in years. I often play around with templates here, which is how I spotted the 'a', and thought there might be a good story behind it. Enjoy. Randy Kryn 11:08 16 February, 2015 (UTC)
- No good story, just a simple error I think. I work in a library and am used to cataloging according to the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, which would lowercase it. Anyway, looks like it was indeed an error. I'll fix it.
- If you're a Burroughs fan, you might be interested in checking out the parody plays The Prisoner of Zodanga and The Barber of Sari over at ERBzine. The first entwines the worlds of Barsoom and L. Sprague de Camp's Harold Shea. The latter takes the already absurd concept of time in Pellucidar to even more absurd extremes. Both were perpetrated by yours truly. BPK (talk) 15:27, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
- Okay, it's fixed. Still have some link clean-up to do. BPK (talk) 15:47, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
- Great, caught that one, thanks. Still doesn't explain why some Abebooks listings use the lower-case 'a', an odd one. I'm not a fan of all of Burroughs work, just read the Mars stories when I was in high school, one after the other, and grew up around some of his old homes. I have a friend though who loves him and attends the dum-dums every year, so will mention that to him too. Thanks! Randy Kryn 20:50 17 February, 2015 (UTC)

editHi Brian,
I want to include an excerpt from the book (maybe one paragraph) to illustrate the writing style; this would fall under the fair use laws vis. book reviews, I think, but I don't know how Wikipedia feels about that. Any thoughts? swain 00:33, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
- Well, someone quoted Edgar Rice Burrough's initial description of Dejah Thoris for the Barsoom article (two short paragraphs), which no one ever seemed to object to. It's no longer there only because I moved it to the Dejah Thoris article, where it still is. I doubt there would be any objection to a short quote, and if anyone does find it a problem they can always delete it. BPK 06:01, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

Tolkien
editNumenor & Atlantis
edit"per Tolkien himself, Númenór was definitely his version of Atlantis"
I wouldn't be so bold as to say you were wrong, but I was under the impression that Tolkien was stringently opposed to people drawing parallels between his fiction and the 'real' world and as such, assumed this extended to other tales and fables. Though many commentators compare his work to European mythology, I was unaware that he himself did this. Do you perhaps have a link to an online source of information regarding this - I find the idea very interesting. - Hayter 10:49, 14 December 2005 (UTC)
- He wasn't quite as stringent as many people think. While opposing any attempt to make a one-to-one correlation between places in Middle Earth and places in the modern world, he did both explicitly and implicitly state that the areas covered by the trilogy's action and maps was the northwest area of the Old World -- that is, Europe -- and the Shire was of course a spiritual stand-in for England, even if not necessarily identical physically.
- Tolkien's Middle Earth setting as a whole was always admitted to be a fictional pre-history of the real world, as noted in the prefatory matter to The Lord of the Rings. As such, Númenór was not merely a parallel to Atlantis, but his version thereof -- or rather, our Atlantis myth was at least implicitly presented as an imperfect memory of Númenór, the "real" Atlantis in his scheme of things.
- While the existence of Atlantis in the real world's prehistory is dubious to say the least, its legendary role in that prehistory is well established -- and Númenór plays exactly that same role in Tolkien's fictional version of prehistory. (The role being, of course, that of a high maritime civilization that conquered much of Middle Earth = Europe that afterwards sank beneath the sea, but from which much of later civilization derived).
- If Middle Earth is admitted to be an ancient version of our own world, the conclusion that Númenór is intended to be Atlantis is inescapable. Tolkien made this plain both in its corresponding role and in his alternative names for Númenór in the appendices to The Return of the King. I know of no online source for the identification, but if memory serves I believe the issue is addressed more directly in the published volume of his letters and Christopher Tolkien's History of Middle Earth set.
- --BPK.
- Okay, I've done a quick web search, and now I can provide you some references.
- makes much the same argument I have above.
- is a good presentation of Tolkien's various versions of the Númenór story.
- cites the smoking gun; Tolkien's actual equation of Númenór with Atlantis.
- --BPK, 12/14/05.
Very interesting, thanks for taking the time to look it up for me. I note that TORn calls this alignment with 'reality' unusual for Tolkien so perhaps my supposition was not completely false, but the similarities are obvious (and obviously intended) - Atalantë certainly makes a point.
I should really get my own copy of The Silmarillion and investigate C Tolkien's publications. Thanks again. -Hayter 12:50, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
Tolkien stuff
editHi there. You removed a category I added to Gandalf Award. You were quite right to do so - I apologise for going overboard with that. I still want to keep track of things like that (I periodically survey "what links here" from Tolkien-related articles to keep track of how people are linking to the articles), so I have added that article at User:Carcharoth/Tolkien_categories#Other_4 (though I'll make sure not to put it in a category). If you spot any other cases where I've overcategorised, I'd appreciate it if you could add them there. Hope that's OK. Carcharoth 02:14, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
- Oh, wow. I just found Tolkien: A Look Behind "The Lord of the Rings" - I saw a copy of that recently - I'll have to dig around and see if I actually bought it or not. Congratulations on a nice article! I hope you don't mind that I recategorised it to Category:Tolkien studies, as that is where similar book articles have gone. I also put a {{ME-project}} tag on it, and assessed it as part of the ongoing assessment of Tolkien-related articles. If you have any other books like that, would you be thinking of working on them in the near future? Carcharoth 02:26, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
- I don't mind. Good call on that one. I do have copies of various other Tolkien studies I've read over the years, but have no immediate plans to add articles on them – they're pretty much all in storage. Nor do I keep close tabs on the various Tolkien articles, just (mostly) articles I've created or worked on. But if I run across anything of your I think needs work I'll be happy to note it under this discussion. BPK 03:41, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

editThank you for your contribution in John Henry Wright. I can see you were one of the primary contributors in this article. The article has been nominated at DYK. It was a very difficult task to 5x expand this article. Could you please some details on his scholarly papers like "The Origin of Plato's Cave", "Present Problems of the History of the Classical Literature". In addition, A History of All Nations from the Earliest Times has been started by Rosiestep. --Tito☸Dutta 16:25, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
- And I did not add those two references. I mainly expanded using Briggs, the JSTOR articles and Wright's own work. --Tito☸Dutta 16:27, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
- In accordance with your request, I have added details on "The Origin of Plato's Cave" to the article, and corrected a few others. May tackle the other piece at some point. Notability and sources of authors and books
editHi BPK2. You have more experience than me with book articles, so let me check something with you...I'm just trying to understand the notability on these book articles e.g. Magic in Ithkar. My understanding is that WP:BK sets the standard as "subject[1] .. a general audience". I see no general audience or non-trivial sources, so please can you enlighten me? My tagging with unref is wrong, more correct is if I tag them all refimprove / notability / noinline. What do you think? Widefox (talk) 19:58, 7 March 2011 (UTC)
- Good work for adding refs. I'm not too sure about the quality of sources in these articles, so I added back the refimprove tag. Is that ok with you? I noticed you removed the tag, maybe you think the notability covers it already? Widefox (talk) 20:28, 10 March 2011 (UTC)
- The Internet Speculative Fiction database is a wonderful and highly reliable bibliographic source, quite frequently cited in articles on science fiction and fantasy books. Fantastic Fiction isn't as authoritative, but it's fairly comprehensive in what it covers, and occasionally provides nuggets of information not found elsewhere. Where I've cited it in these articles it generally provides information that could be obtained equally as well from the books themselves -- but it's a quick and easy way to add another reference! Actually, the only way I could improve the references at this point would be by adding more. There's nothing wrong with the ones cited. The only remaining issue I can see is that of notability. The editors of the series are quite notable in the field (Norton more than Adams), and you at least used to be able to justify book articles on the grounds of providing comprehensive coverage of the works of a notable author. Not sure if that still applies. If the books need to stand up by their own merits, the issue is more problematical. But having written the articles, I'd hate to lose them... Thank you
editThank you for pointing out that the problematic copyright section was widespread throughout books by that author. I have begun deleting the sections, as well as tagging the articles as relying only on one source and as having no footnotes. Sven Manguard Wha? 03:08, 4 February 2014 (UTC)
Proposed deletion of Chicks and Balances
editThe article Chicks and Balances has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- No reliable sources and as a result does not meet WP:NBOOK
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. AusLondonder (talk) 17:11, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
- I see you removed the proposed deletion template, arguing the article does have a reliable source. The Internet Speculative Fiction Database is not a WP:RELIABLESOURCE AusLondonder (talk) 17:50, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
- Well, I would say it is. But in any case, there's also OCLC, as per the infobox. BPK (talk) 17:55, 15 July 2015 (UTC)

Conan
editCan you explain on the Talk page further about date based titles please? In ictu oculi (talk) 08:38, 21 August 2015 (UTC)
- I have done so on Talk:Conan the Barbarian (2011 novel) as per your request. The argument is specific to the issue in question (whether in this specific instance author-based disambiguation should be preferred to date-based disambiguation), and does not necessarily constitute an argument for date based titles in general. BPK (talk) 16:16, 21 August 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks, WP:BOOKDAB is not in a good shape, seems to have been played around with by 2 or 3 users who aren't actively editing books any more. In ictu oculi (talk) 19:55, 21 August 2015 (UTC)
ISFDB links
editPlease don't remove ISFDB links from external links sections merely because the same page is used as an article reference. When standard links (especially templated links) are present in most or all suitable articles, practice is that use as a reference should not preclude inclusion in the external links section, since users will come to expect to find it there. Note that IMDB templated links are usually present in performer articles even if used as references. The Big Bad Wolfowitz (aka Hullaballoo) (talk) 20:02, 16 December 2015 (UTC)
- Seems redundant, but okay. BPK (talk) 20:14, 16 December 2015 (UTC)

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/The Darrell Schweitzer Megapack (2nd nomination) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Redirects
editRather than mass-undoing my redirects, IMHO it would be productive if you could develop a single article--so that I may get the chance to see what such an article would result into!As of now,I have re-instated the redirects.Cheers!Winged Blades Godric 15:05, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
- Wait,I am not undoing your reversion of my edit at Nebula Awards Showcase 2017 and letting it stay as it is.And I sincerely hope, that I will see some real improvements soon! Thanks!Winged Blades Godric 15:08, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
- And I'm planning on a selective merge from the content section etc. from all destination articles to the target.Winged Blades Godric 15:18, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
- I will be happy to further develop one of the articles, and in the meantime will extend you the courtesy of refraining from mass-undoing your mass redirects. I have no taste for edit wars. Let me state plainly here, however, that I consider the mass redirecting itself discourteous, improper and disruptive editing. When contesting an article, it is preferable to tag it for discussion and state your grounds for challenging it in the tag, not take unilateral action. Doing the latter prejudges the issue. Doing the latter on a mass scale simply compounds the prejudgment. BPK (talk) 15:32, 2 June 2017 (UTC)

The Nebula Awards 19
editHi. A few years back an editor changed all of the Nebula Award anthology articles to redirects, and you put them all back except The Nebula Awards 19. Is there any chance you could do this one too? If not I could do it, but I don't know the context and I don't know where I would get the book cover image. Thanks! Dan Bloch (talk) 15:39, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
Hi Dan. The desecrator's rationale was that there was little supporting evidence as to the volumes' significance. I recreated the articles for each as I found such supporting evidence, generally in the form of reviews. I have every intention of recreating #19 too, eventually, but to date haven't found any reviews. All I can say is, if you or someone else doesn't get to it first, stay tuned on that one. BPK (talk) 15:47, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
isfdb shows three reviews. Is that not sufficient? Let me know if you want me to do it. Dan Bloch (talk) 16:21, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
It is, it's just that I hadn't been able to put my hands on any copies of them in order to quote them. That said, since there's plainly popular demand for the article (from you) I have restored the article. Hopefully some enterprising soul with access to the actual reviews will be able to supply material therefrom, if I'm not able to. Also restored the cover image. A good source for most science fiction cover images is the very same isfdb on which you found the review citations, by the say. BPK (talk) 21:13, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
Thanks! Dan Bloch (talk) 22:51, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
Finally was able to get my hands on (and quote) the Tom Easton review of the anthology from Analog. Now added to the article. So there's that. BPK (talk) 18:46, 4 May 2021 (UTC)

Chalcis
editPlease consider restoring "Kingdom of Chalcis" to its previous redirect and speedily deleting your new unattributed "Chalcis (ancient state)" which has the same sourcing problems as its predecessor. Your so-called "ancient state" is basically Iturea, where I redirected, since most of the listed rulers are described as rulers of Iturea (1, 2), not just Chalcis specifically. Any information should be merged there, not copied into an entirely new page. Avilich (talk) 00:03, 11 March 2023 (UTC)
- We are evidently in disagreement as to the validity of the article. If I recall correctly, your main objection to it, expressed when you deleted it, was its characterization as a kingdom, an issue I addressed on recreating it. Your more general objections may be valid, but do not, I feel, warrant unilateral deletion, or speedy deletion, of a long-standing article developed my multiple contributors. You are certainly welcome to initiate a deletion nomination. BPK (talk) 17:44, 12 March 2023 (UTC)
- You misunderstood then: the rationale was not simple terminology, but that it was not a distinct state from the one described in the article I merged it into. There was no unilateral deletion, I merged it into the correct article, but you recreated the incorrect one (together with all of its old sourcing problems), so please undo it. Avilich (talk) 03:20, 13 March 2023 (UTC)
- I understand your rationale. I simply don't concur with it. You made assumptions about the validity of two articles without, as far as I can tell, consulting with other Wikipedians who contributed to them. You then acted, also without consultation, on the assumption your action was routine and would not be contested. So, yes, you acted unilaterally. I do not question your good will or or desire to make improvements, only whether this was, indeed, an improvement. I don't think it was.
- In regard to the sourcing issue, I don't really see the problems you do. The Chalcis article seemed to me reasonably well-sourced, better, in fact, than quite a number of other articles whose validity has not been controverted, and which have been allowed to let stand.
- In regard to the distinct state issue, again, we are not in agreement. Ituraea was only a unified kingdom (possibly) during the reign of Ptolemy, and, if anything, the term better describes an ethnicity than a state. The city-states of Chalcis and Abila/Abilene that emerged from the ruin of Ptolemy's realm seem to have been longer-lived, more stable, and actually more state-like. As such, I believe they warrant separate articles, just as, say, Rome warrants an article despite having formerly been part of Latium.
- I also note that it doesn't appear that much of the material in the Chalcis article has actually been incorporated into the one on Ituraea, meaning that the "merge" resulted in the loss of information--and, indeed, much of the evidence that the Ituraeans ever in fact did succeed at effectively establishing anything like a state or states.
- There is nothing wrong with a routine merge if it is truly routine--that is, obvious, uncontroversial and uncontested. This, in my view, isn't. In such cases, there's s process to sort things out, which, again, you are welcome to pursue. If the consensus is in accord with your position, that would be the go-ahead for the merge. Otherwise, your concerns may be better addressed by efforts to improve both articles.
- Returning the situation to the status quo, which is essentially what I did, after taking into accord your contention that Chalcis wasn't really a kingdom (which appeared valid), seems a better way to go until the issues in dispute are resolved. BPK (talk) 16:43, 13 March 2023 (UTC)
- I don't know how you found that Chalcis was longer-lived: the sources I posted above refer to Ptolemy, Lysanias and Zenodorus as king, tetrarch or high priest of Iturea, and while their principality may be called after their capital at times, there is no evidence that they were distinct (Abiene may be another matter, though). The "Independent kingdom" and "Roman vassal state" sections of the page are virtually unsourced, but not even there a clear distinction is drawn. After that there is only the partition of Chalcis among many other territories between the Romans and Herodians, and the rest is simply the history of Chalcis as an individual city. Avilich (talk) 21:47, 13 March 2023 (UTC)
- Please stop edit warring, you're on the 3RR limit. Avilich (talk) 17:45, 21 March 2023 (UTC)
- Looks like you are, too. Please note that I didn't start it. I merely undid an arbitrary redirect initiated without discussion, with due attention to what appeared to be the main objection. I did invite/initiate a discussion myself (see above). The main response from you and others has been to repeat the objected-to behavior without adequate discussion to achieve a consensus. I suggest you examine your own behavior. That said, I have refrained from activity on the contested page. You ought to have, also. BPK (talk) 14:47, 23 March 2023 (UTC)

Better source request for File:Salamis-novel.jpg
editThanks for your upload to Wikipedia:
You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete or generic. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact source (such as the web page, or printed document) where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain, search engine, pinboard, aggregator, or the direct/bare URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. If you have any questions please ask them at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you. — Ирука13 21:07, 3 August 2023 (UTC)

Thanks and a reminder
editHi, thanks for expanding Bookshops & Bonedust. A reminder, that when an article has an established citation style from the first major contributor or other consensus, Wikipedia content guidelines suggest keeping the existing style. This includes not removing citation templates from articles that already use them and not moving citations from a reflist to the prose. Please see the subsection Wikipedia:Citing sources § To be avoided or the full section WP:WHENINROME for details. Cheers. —siroχo 20:10, 17 November 2023 (UTC)

The article The Castle of Terror has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Unsourced and tagged for notability since 2017. I find no academic sources whatsoever on google scholar for this title (but many about the horror film, or arthur Conan doyle).
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. asilvering (talk) 00:20, 2 February 2024 (UTC)

The article Steven Frankos has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Completely non-notable author, seems to be riding coattails of Harry Turtledove. Completely fails WP:BIO and WP:AUTHOR. Books barely have any reviews, weren't on any best sellers lists, didn't win any awards. Non-notable.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
