Coby Sevdy (pronounced /ˈsɛv.diː/; born May 12th, 1984) is an American citizen who is retired from the United States Air Force. He goes by the name Coby, a nickname granted by his parents and adopted by all his peers.

Military career

Coby was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota and was raised in Stillwater, Minnesota. He graduated from Stillwater Area High School in 2002. Under the advice of his retired Chief Master Sergeant uncle, he signed up for the United States Air Force during his senior year of high school and left for Basic Military Training (BMT) two weeks after graduation. He joined the Air Force under the AFSC 3C0X1 (Communications-Computer System Operations). This AFSC was retired on November 1st, 2009 and integrated into a new 3DXXX career field, of which Coby became a 3D0X2 (Cyber Systems Operations). On November 1st, 2021, the 3DXXX career fields were migrated from a support role into an operational role, changing their AFSCs into new 1D7XX career fields. Coby's new AFSC became 1D7X1B (Cyber Systems Operations).

On July 1st, 2022, Coby retired from the United States Air Force.

Call Sign

Coby's initial call sign was Puss 'n' Boots, granted by his peers in Combat Readiness School for running the official PT test in combat boots. Despite this disadvantage, he still scored a 92.25 out of 100.

While stationed in Iraq, his peers changed his call sign to Miles, a name derived from his last name, Sevdy. When mispronounced with three syllables instead of two, Sevdy sounds a lot like the number Seventy (70). Some of his friends found humor in using the phrase "Seventy Miles per Hour" instead of "Sevdy". His peers shortened this phrase to Miles, an in-joke regarding his unique last name. An interesting coincidence is that Miles means "Soldier" in Classical Latin.

Coby did not have an official call sign because he was not an aviator, nor has he been granted a call sign by a general officer. However, Coby has used these call signs for several past operations where he's required radio communications.
