Rye
editFrom the text of the book, "rye" seems to mean gentleman. 80.2.204.209 (talk) 13:54, 30 June 2008 (UTC)
- "Rye" or "rai" means "gentleman", "master", "king" (cf. Raja) in the Romani language. Hence, "Romany Rye" (or 'Romano Rai') could be rendered as "Romani gentleman" or even "King of the Gypsies". See the folk song quoted at Didicoy. —Zalktis (talk) 12:32, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
Date?
editThe article says the book was "written in 1857" and (inter alia) completed in 1853 - which is correct? Jgstringer (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 06:56, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
