Merge

edit

It has been suggested that Sotheby's International Realty be merged with this page. I think since it's a seperate entity altogether, and is more related to Realogy (formerly Cendant), so it shoud be kept seperate. --Auinteractive 15:49, 9 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I agree, the articles should remain separate. Doctalk 23:55, 9 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Of course it should. The Realty group was spun out of Sotheby's so the history of Sotheby's International Realty is very important to Sothebys, the auction house. They clients are loyal to both the auction house and the Realty house. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.23.250.208 (talk) 21:41, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Name

edit

Does anyone know where the name Sotheby comes from?

I've added the explanation from their page on the subject... 68.39.174.238 21:05, 2 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Not NPOV

edit

"excellent"? and why no mention of the recent controversies?

The pic

edit

If it's a public building, someone should be able to get a free-er pic of the place... 68.39.174.238 21:02, 2 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'll see about getting a new pic --Auinteractive 15:49, 9 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Age

edit

Sotheby's themselves have stated that they're the second oldest auction house in continuous operation (second to Stockholms Auktionsverk) as stated, however when reading about Stockholms Auktionsverk it's stated that Uppsala Auktionskammare was established in 1731 which would make it older than Sotheby's... http://www.uppsalaauktion.se/ Jfalk (talk) 09:29, 6 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Pronunciation

edit

The name is hardly phonetic so I am putting it here, with my imperfect command of IPA.

ˈsʊðəbiːz

If that is not correct, please adjust. Varlaam (talk) 01:46, 4 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Collusion

edit

There was a suggestion of collusion between Sotheby's and Alan Bond, over a painting. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.15.21.214 (talk) 10:41, 17 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Outdated as of 2021

edit

Hi there, it seems as though this page is fairly outdated in terms of recent info. In the coming days I'll be taking on this page as a personal project, let me know if I do anything too crazy haha. Gold Pieces (talk) 16:37, 4 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi Gold Pieces and thanks for your efforts on improving the article. I just got around to adding the bit about sneaker sales that MacBates was keen to add, and they do seem somewhat notable (even if it provokes a WTF? response on my part!). I'm not intending to return to the article, and know little about the various shenanigans described, but to my eye that whole section on the 2014 Activist investors, with lengthy quotes, seems a bit WP:UNDUE. Perhaps this could be paraphrased a bit more tightly, and most of the blockquotes replaced by paraphrasing? Laterthanyouthink (talk) 04:58, 19 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Hey Laterthanyouthink. I agree, we could definitely cut down the activist investor portion in terms of overuse on quotes. It'll tidy up the page a fair bit to either remove those portions without changing the events that took place or paraphrasing the events. Another thing I'm noticing is the financial section/number of employees in the infobox - Sotheby's is listed as a private company now since being purchased and there won't be another update to those numbers, but the info is being sourced through Wikidata. I don't want to step on any toes but it seems like the info should be removed. Thoughts? Gold Pieces (talk) 14:48, 21 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Hey Gold Pieces. Sound good. There may be some justification for reducing the Controversy section too, wrt WP:CRIT and WP:RECENTISM (off the top of my head - I haven't properly read or tried to assess their importance; will leave that to you). I don't really know the answer to your question about the numbers, not knowing enough about the purpose of the figures on Wikidata. I did notice, though, that the employees refers to the 2018 Form K (whatever that is), whereas the other numbers refer to 2016. I don't have any objections to removing them, but it might be worth seeking a second opinion at the Help Desk (here or at Wikidata?) or another editor who's likely to be more knowledgeable on the topic. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 01:55, 23 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Laterthanyouthink, I appreciate your help. I made a post at the Help Desk & will see what they say. Gold Pieces (talk) 16:43, 23 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Amy Cappellazzo

edit

Amy Cappellazzo has no WP entry? That can't be. She is one of the most important string pullers on the art market! (I will not take action there! I am from Germany. ;-) ). --Delabarquera (talk) 14:11, 30 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hawaiian Feather cloak on the Market

edit

hello, I just saw a Hawaiian Feather cloak on the Market, it is a Rare item and was reserved for the Royalty. many artifacts (especially those stolen from Iolani Palace in 1893) are trying to be hunted down and brought back to the islands. I think it would be illegal to have such items circling around would it not? 808Poiboy (talk) 22:39, 5 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
