Talk:John Brademas

As far as I know http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucas_M._Miller was the first Greek American in Congress.... That should be edited. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 140.182.148.27 (talk) 08:46, 30 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

I'll mention this to John the next time I'm in touch with him. There's an interesting difference here, in that the point of Brademas's claim is that he grew up in the Greek-American cultural and the Orthodox religious traditions. Miller may have been in some sense "genetically" Greek, or Peloponnesian, or Macedonian, or whatever he was. Are there genes for a nationality in a place that has been over-run by half a dozen different peoples in the immediately past three thousand years? How would one know that he wasn't Italian, or Albanian, or Turkish?
Would it be fair to say Miller was a Greek foundling? He certainly doesn't seem to be an immigrant, nor a "hyphenated American" in the mawkish Ellis island sense of the word. What are the conventions around this sort of thing?
BTW, I fixed a minor typo above.
