The linked List_of_Anthurium_species needs major, major editing; it contains spelling errors, unpublished species names, and who knows what else. (I have neither the time nor inclination to do it myself; personally I don't see any need to include such a list in the first place, when somewhat authoritative references outside Wikipedia can be linked instead.) MrDarwin 01:24, 31 March 2006 (UTC) I referred for the flowering season and fertilizing information but couldn't find a clue. A OBER 27.01.2006Reply

"Purification"

edit

The article had the following paragraph added: "Anthurium as a pot plant also has an air purifying effect. Anthurium is not the only houseplant with that positive characteristic, but the big advantage of an anthurium is that its blooming shelve life is very long in time. This distinguishes an anthurium from other flowering plants. The air purifying qualities of Anthurium have an effect on formaldehyde, ammonia and volatile organic gases. Several anthuriums in a room reduce the harmful substances in buildings by more than 50% in 24 hours." This is highly misleading and a propagation of the common idea that Anthurium has some abnormal air cleaning ability. In fact, the original study at NASA from which this idea originated [1] said "for vitually all plants tested, the reductions in benzene and formaldehyde were significant". the later study that looked specifically at Anthurium [2] found it was pretty middle of the road among houseplants. See also the NASA Clean Air Study. I'm updating the article to reflect this. --Anuran (talk) 08:28, 4 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Working on it

edit

I've completely copyedited the main article, and am currently working on the sections. I'll eventually get around to the list, and I hope to make it current - I'll try to base it on TROPICOS rather than Kew, since the latter has a lot of obsolete taxonomy kicking around on it. I'd defend keeping the list - these are interesting plants, and the list would provide an easy linkup to the species; this furthers the encyclopaedic content thing. anthuriums come in diffrent colors like red, pink ,lavender ,white —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.198.64.226 (talk) 21:57, 5 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

They also exist in Costa Rica as well. But we are talking about small details here. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.138.135.42 (talk) 18:05, 23 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

I may be mistaken, I'm not an expert, but I believe the main photo is of a Spathiphyllum...is it not? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 112.153.19.165 (talk) 04:12, 15 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Phylum and Class

edit

I know APG doesn't use the terms "phylum" and "class", but instead of "kingdom, unclassified, unclassified, order...", why not "kingdom, phylum, class, order..."? Most people on Wikipedia do not have strong backgrounds in botany. It would be easier to use the terms with which they are familiar from high school (or college, if they are older), and have footnotes by the terms "phylum" and "class", indicating they are no longer officially used by APG (which isn't the only botanical taxonomic system, though it is the most sensible to use in this context). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.138.135.42 (talk) 18:04, 23 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

There are many methods of classifying flora and fauna. Just because people aren't used to one method that is currently used by biologists doesn't mean every single genus article needs an explanation into the basic taxonomy of the time. They can easily just lookup APG on wiki and learn more or click on the link to the given rank.Chhe (talk) 01:41, 24 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
I go along with Chhe on this; My background is zoological rather than botanical, and I would love it if the botanists would adopt our terminology, but I would rather have WP use correct terminology, meaning the established terminology of the discipline, than give informed readers an impression of illiteracy in the field. Anyway, let's face it; the entire Linnaean system is due for an overhaul in information-theoretic terms, as soon as one can be worked out! (But not before, please!)

I am changing the word "endemic" in the sentence: "Some species have been introduced into Asian rain forests, but are not endemic." The customary modern usage of the word suggests both that the organism is indigenous to the area and that it occurs nowhere else. I cannot understand the statement in that sense and connection as it stands, and I do not think that it can be the intended meaning. Apologies if I have misunderstood, and please let me know if I have misinterpreted a correct and deliberate usage. JonRichfield (talk) 15:15, 18 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Picture at the top is wrong

edit

The picture on top of the article is most certainly not a "white Anthurium," but instead a spathiphyllum, commonly known as "peace lily."Jlee562 (talk) 22:02, 2 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Help me

edit

Adding an edit/ unsure if the information can be added to wiki due to nature. Wanted to add slang names for the above plant. Slang term in South Africa - Randy Choir Boy. Slang term in Carribbean - Little boys Willy. 2A00:23EE:15E0:4163:E43C:FC0A:CEC1:49C4 (talk) 18:54, 20 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

If there are reliable sources that discuss the slang terms, they could probably be added, but it might be best to consider this the start of a discussion to determine if it's worth including these names. If you want more help, change the {{help me-helped}} back into a {{help me}}, stop by the Teahouse, or Wikipedia's live help channel, or the help desk to ask someone for assistance. Primefac (talk) 19:49, 20 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
