It seems clear to me that "Lauren" actually refers to Gore's second daughter, Kristin. That portion of the novel takes place in 1997, when Karenna would have been 24 and too old to be an undergraduate (she graduated in 1995), while Kristin would have been 20 (graduated 1999). Both sisters attended Harvard.
