[[User talk:Peterfitzgerald|Talk]]</small> 20:26, 2 June 2012 (EDT)\n\n== Jerusalem ==\nJames its a bit rich you guys deleting my edits when none of you apparently have travelled to Jerusalem, nor are you an experienced traveller. A city is what it is, lets not try to paint it through rose lense glasses. BTW I have been to both Togo and Kyrgyzstan. <small>—The [[Project:Using_talk_pages#Talk_page_formatting|preceding]] comment was added by [[User:(WT-en) Rosenthalm|(WT-en) Rosenthalm‎]] ([[User talk:(WT-en) Rosenthalm|talk]] • [[Special:Contributions/(WT-en) Rosenthalm|contribs]]) </small>\n\nHi James,\n\nI have travelled to Jerusalem 3 times. I have a particular interest in travelling Islamic countries and have covered almost all of central asia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Qatar, Jordan.\nWhilst travelling in Jerusalem last week I noticed a significant increase in tension and segregation. The only place that I have every witnessed greater tension and segregation is in Osh (Kygyzstan, on the Uzbek border), which was a few months after riots and fighting between the Kygrgs and Uzbeks resulted in the city being burned down.\nWhilst walking in the old city, the Islamic section was far from welcoming, and in fact I was encouraged on several occassions to walk elsewhere. Whilst my experience can be considered an individual circumstance - I would suspect that this is common but not written.\n\nMarc <small>—The [[Project:Using_talk_pages#Talk_page_formatting|preceding]] comment was added by [[User:(WT-en) Rosenthalm|(WT-en) Rosenthalm‎]] ([[User talk:(WT-en) Rosenthalm|talk]] • [[Special:Contributions/(WT-en) Rosenthalm|contribs]]) </small>\n\n== New main page ==\nHi James, I've just started a [[Talk:Main_Page#New_Main_Page_Layout_for_Wikivoyage?|discussion]] concerning a new main page layout. As it stands, the way the TOC is formatted does mess with the page layout in unwanted ways, on either side - especially when the list is expanded out some. Using that UNESCO list page is a good example: with the TOC on the right, opening up its Africa tree ends up pushing the \"M'Zab Valley, Algeria\" photo down the list as far as Cape Verde's text, depending on your browser's width. Using the left-alignment with manual <code><nowiki>__TOC__</nowiki></code> placement at the very top looks good on my display when you first load the page, but then opening up Africa creates the same old problem where the Algeria header is separated from its text by a screenful of white space. The Wikipedia style that I mentioned doesn't wrap text around the TOC at all, so it doesn't interfere with the formatting of other sections - ''but'' then there's always a TOC-height block of white space between the first and second section of the page. None of these are perfect options....\n\nIf a page needs it, the keyword <code><nowiki>__NOTOC__</nowiki></code> anywhere will suppress the TOC completely. -- [[User:Dguillaume|D. Guillaume]] ([[User talk:Dguillaume|talk]]) 07:15, 2 October 2012 (CEST)\n\n:Hey, thanks for your message, Dguillaume. I replied back at the VfD section as well. As I said there, I don't see keeping the photo and country name together as necessary. The image is just something to spark interest. If someone opens the TOC, it's likely they know what country they're looking for. But it's definitely important to have a TOC on a page like that. That happened around the 14th of this month. When I looked again I noticed you changed all the image-formats in the template yourself. I hope you aren't mad about it, if I promise something, I always do the thing I promised, but with my private life demanding time I have no control on when exactly I start with something, but always make sure I complete it. If there is anything else I can help with, I am happy to do. After fixing many files of flags and road signs earlier on several Wikivoyages, I started some days ago with fixing the wst: shared: and Wikipedia: links on the Dutch Wikivoyage. I'm a bit distracted right now with ToC templates, but feel free to jump in and propose some changes in the meantime.\n: Re variations on the maps, I think some of it is our standards have evolved over time (and we don't like to go back and update old maps that much) and another big part is personal preferences amongst map makers. I'm certainly guilty of the latter, I'm not a fan of the blue on blue in the title box so I tend to use blue on a light brown, which I prefer. I think each of us tends to prefer certain region colour palettes over others, so that's another variation. And sometimes it depends on the map itself -- the number of regions and the amount of detail (lots of rivers vs no rivers, lots of roads vs no roads, railroads, number of cities displayed, etc.) all impact the colour and style of individual elements. I've found that sometimes I have to deviate from standards to improve readability. Anyway, it would be good to hear your thoughts on what to standarize and hear what others think. Maybe my program and editing skills are a bit slower, but I think it might've taken me a bit longer than 2 minutes to download, edit, upload and go through Commons' bureaucracy. Either way, I reverted rather than corrected because it really shouldn't be our responsibility to correct. Users should read the rules before creating banners, and that may mean less banners in the long-term, but at least it doesn't mean inconsistency and a messy site. Many users believe that the banner template should be configured so that if a banner is not within 5px or so of the 7:1 ratio, it doesn't even display. We'd probably implement it if it was feasible. I guess my point is that we should promote users to follow the guidelines rather than go around causing people to clean up after them. Welcome and thanks!

Hi, James. It looks like no-one gave you an official welcome yet. So, welcome and thanks for the great work you're putting up! And here are some useful links for you, in case you haven't already checked them out:

First, there is the Project:Manual of style, which has links to all kinds of other useful pages.

Secondly, there is the Project:Travellers' Pub, where I would like to buy you a virtual drink of your choice for all your efforts. But seriously, that's where you can discuss anything that goes beyond what is relevant to - or getting response on - a talk page for a particular article.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them here or in the pub, but for now, it looks like you've jumped in with both feet and done a lot of good already in a short time. I hope you keep it up.

All the best,

Jerusalem

James its a bit rich you guys deleting my edits when none of you apparently have travelled to Jerusalem, nor are you an experienced traveller. A city is what it is, lets not try to paint it through rose lense glasses. BTW I have been to both Togo and Kyrgyzstan. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) Rosenthalm‎ (talkcontribs)

Hi James,

I have travelled to Jerusalem 3 times. I have a particular interest in travelling Islamic countries and have covered almost all of central asia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Qatar, Jordan. Whilst travelling in Jerusalem last week I noticed a significant increase in tension and segregation. The only place that I have every witnessed greater tension and segregation is in Osh (Kygyzstan, on the Uzbek border), which was a few months after riots and fighting between the Kygrgs and Uzbeks resulted in the city being burned down. Whilst walking in the old city, the Islamic section was far from welcoming, and in fact I was encouraged on several occassions to walk elsewhere. Whilst my experience can be considered an individual circumstance - I would suspect that this is common but not written.

TOC formatting

Hi James,

I didn't want to derail the conversation on the VfD page any further, but I did want to expand on my explanation of the TOC repositioning to you. As it stands, the way the TOC is formatted does mess with the page layout in unwanted ways, on either side - especially when the list is expanded out some. Using that UNESCO list page is a good example: with the TOC on the right, opening up its Africa tree ends up pushing the "M'Zab Valley, Algeria" photo down the list as far as Cape Verde's text, depending on your browser's width. Using the left-alignment with manual __TOC__ placement at the very top looks good on my display when you first load the page, but then opening up Africa creates the same old problem where the Algeria header is separated from its text by a screenful of white space. The Wikipedia style that I mentioned doesn't wrap text around the TOC at all, so it doesn't interfere with the formatting of other sections - but then there's always a TOC-height block of white space between the first and second section of the page. None of these are perfect options....

If a page needs it, the keyword __NOTOC__ anywhere will suppress the TOC completely. -- D. Guillaume (talk) 07:15, 2 October 2012 (CEST)

Hey, thanks for your message, Dguillaume. I replied back at the VfD section as well. As I said there, I don't see keeping the photo and country name together as necessary. The image is just something to spark interest. If someone opens the TOC, it's likely they know what country they're looking for. But it's definitely important to have a TOC on a page like that. Questions

Hello! I've been making some edits and ran into a few questions I didn't find answers to. Hoping you could help.

  1. If a page has attractions, shops, hotels, etc. that are listed but not in the <see> template, should I put the info into a template format?
  2. From my understanding the size of a location to have an article needs a place to sleep. So an article like Sun River may be complete?
  3. And, adding a location that is small is okay? As long as it has a place to sleep and something to do/see?

Thanks for the help! —The preceding comment was added by Tbennert (talkcontribs)

Sorry for the delay

Hallo JamesA, Sorry for the waiting, there are days and weeks in which my life outside the wiki unexpectedly asks much more time than expected, which causes me to have the wikis on a hold until there is again time for it. I think I now start with other language versions that aren't that big. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 00:18, 26 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Spambot

Hi! Just so you know, users like User:Ksjohf28 are actually spambots and can be blocked indefinitely on sight. We usually report these to the stewards too, so that they can lock the account globally and do a CheckUser to globally block the IPs as well. I've already done that for this one (so extending the block to indefinite would be moot), but next time you can indefblock and then post on m:SRG. --Rschen7754 11:42, 27 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

embarassed - thanks to you both - will look more carefully at contents... ! sats (talk) 11:47, 27 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
Went ahead and extended to indef since the stewards are slow at locking tonight - hope this isn't a problem. --Rschen7754 11:56, 27 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for fixing that up! I wasn't actually completely sure that he was a spambot, and was feeling a little too tired to bother working out. I assumed once a spambot is unable to edit for a few days, it would simply give up anyway. But maybe that isn't the case. Thanks again, JamesA >talk 12:12, 27 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
That's probably true, but better to not take a chance. Global locking by the stewards prevents it from going to other wikis as well and doing the same thing, too. --Rschen7754 08:30, 28 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Help needed at South_Island

We're just completing a major re-organisation and it would be a bit neater if we could get the clickable geo location globe to be re-located to the far right of the new horizontal nav-box - but I don't know how to do that for this experimental template, James: South Island/Template. Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide... -- Alice 23:19, 3 March 2013 (UTC)

I'd be happy to help, but did you obtain consensus to use that template? It looks all nice and fancy, and is also quite useful, but such a major change to article layout must be discussed. We need consistency across all of our travel guides. We also need to consider mobile devices and PDF/printed guides. JamesA >talk 12:42, 4 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
In the normal English meaning of the word, No. In the way that long term users like Globe-trotter and Peter Fitzgerald use it here on Wikivoyage, Yes.
You may have read the lengthy discussion at Talk:South_Island#Regions and folks reading that page have had more than 6 weeks to approve the mock-up that I introduced at User:Alice/Kitchen/Marlborough-Kaikoura-with-new-style-ToC with this edit: http://en.wikivoyage.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:South_Island&diff=next&oldid=2123705. As you will see, there was a very extensive discussion of regions on that discussion page, but I will entirely understand if you only feel able to introduce a geo-location globe and link on the experimental template page located at User:Alice/Kitchen/Marlborough-Kaikoura-with-new-style-ToC, James. -- Alice 19:04, 4 March 2013 (UTC)

Maps

Hi James - the arrow was a decision on my part, glad you like it. The arrow (and some other elements) is very much based on the old colour scheme so I wanted to make something that fit with the new logo's colours to change it up a bit. And, to be honest, I'm a bit tired of looking at all that blue! But, um, yeah, I've totally forgotten to raise it on the expedition page to see what others think/get approvals. Thanks for reminding me!

I'm definitely supportive of making some small changes to our map templates so they look a little different. -Shaundd (talk) 14:13, 17 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

I've kind of started the discussion at Wikivoyage_talk:Regions_map_Expedition#North_Arrow_variation, although didn't lay out anything concrete other than the north arrow. I'm a bit distracted right now with ToC templates, but feel free to jump in and propose some changes in the meantime.
Re variations on the maps, I think some of it is our standards have evolved over time (and we don't like to go back and update old maps that much) and another big part is personal preferences amongst map makers. Cheers -Shaundd (talk) 04:40, 19 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

I would like to play around with this over on pt:. We are in the process of deprecating the xml listing in favor of mediawiki templates we can use in portuguese, and I'd really like to find a way to make some kind of template insertion tool that doesn't occupy 7 lines of blue text on the edit page... Hi Texugo. Sorry I haven't had a go at the toolbar listing buttons yet; I should be able to test it on the weekend. Or if you wanted to try yourself, you best start at mw:Extension:WikiEditor/Toolbar customization. Beware that the documentation is incomplete, confusing and often incorrect. The talk page may be more enlightening, but don't bother asking for help; no one knows how it works. Good luck! JamesA >talk 12:10, 14 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hey, I notice you are playing with the code for removing the reference button. Notice that if you leave "section" and "group" but remove the "tool" parameter, it will remove the whole insert section, which leads me to believe that it is the tool name we are getting wrong... Texugo (talk) 12:11, 15 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hmm, interesting. We may be getting somewhere. What browser do you run? You can learn a lot by right-clicking on one of the toolbar buttons and clicking "Inspect element" (in Chrome at least), which brings up various source codes and button names. The Reference button displays this:
JamesA >talk 12:15, 15 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
I'm starting to suspect that the reason "Search and Replace" can be removed is because it has its own 'search' group all to itself. While "Reference" is stuck in the 'insert' group with various other buttons, which may be causing the problem. Maybe try to remove the bold and italic buttons at the same time? Did you test removing the button while not introducing new listings buttons? JamesA >talk 12:23, 15 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
I did try removing the button without introducing new buttons, with the same results. Nice trick about inspecting the element. I use Chrome too and didn't know about that. Anyway, actually I didn't have any success removing the Search and Replace button either (that's the example from the toolbar customization page). I could remove the bold and italic buttons at the same time by removing the whole group but didn't try listing the individual buttons to be removed.Texugo (talk) 12:31, 15 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

(For this edit your edit summary was: "standard image formatting per current policy")

You're still welcome to pop round and have that cuppa! --90.215.245.164 10:26, 27 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

This Wikivoyage-namespace page describes how an image should be added to an article. I hope that is of assistance. James Atalk 10:31, 27 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Skipping over the narrowly pedantic point that it isn't actually a policy page, I still don't understand why User:Peterfitzgerald (and presumably yourself) should want to forbid editors from formatting images in a way that allows registered users to see thumbnails displayed at the preferences they have set: http://en.wikivoyage.org/w/index.php?title=Wikivoyage:How_to_add_an_image&oldid=2315002.
Is this some secret thing to do with the missing User:Frank? If it's a secret thing I can provide you with an e-mail address so I don't continue to tread on bruised toes, but right now I'm baffled! --90.215.245.164 10:45, 27 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Just because it doesn't have the word "policy" stamped on, doesn't mean it can be completely overlooked. Such pages are not just written on a whim, but decided by consensus as well. I am open to displaying images in such a way, but as far as I'm aware, there is no current proposal to do so. If you want to display images in such a way, propose it somewhere and get consensus, like everyone else. I can't find any contributions here for "User:Frank", so I have no idea what you are baffled about. James Atalk 10:51, 27 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Somaliland flag

While I can sympathise with your (assumed) reasoning, don't you think this positioning in the banner forces the flag to be a little too small for any but the very simplest flags, James? --W. Franke-mailtalk 22:29, 30 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Yup, but we're trying to compromise as there are some users who'd rather the flag be abolished completely, and I think that's counterintuitive. I really don't think it's a disaster to include it in the quickbar, but apparently every tiny bit of space makes the difference. James Atalk 07:50, 1 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Ahhhh, that puts things in context. If it's a choice of no flag at all or a tiny one, then in the banner is definitely the less of two evils.
What do you think of this change as a slight improvement then, James? --W. Franke-mailtalk 13:18, 1 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
I prefer the flag in front. I'm happy to see the flag larger, but it's about what others are willing to compromise. You may want to discuss it at Template talk:Quickbar. James Atalk 13:23, 1 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi James, unfortunately there seems to be commas missing in the CSS. Better change that quick. -- torty3 (talk) 15:12, 1 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Govt travel advisories

You did some excellent work in adding govt travel advisories as a parameter to our warning box (supported by consensus), so you might like to know that adding links to govt travel advisories has been tangentially queried here while deprecating external links to on-line relevant news broadcasters reports in situations of potential civil war. --W. Franke-mailtalk 17:10, 4 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Banners - don't remove, replace

Hey James, this. With Paris/La Defense, myself and Saqib both fell over ourselves to correct this, just because we both noticed that, but otherwise in some less-watched articles, a well-meaning editor could be heartbroken and feel that Wikivoyage is an evil and ugly police state if you did just that. Resizing a banner is a 2-minute job, and I guess you could have done it as well as I did, but in case you feel unable to, why don't you leave messages on my talk page notifying me of banners that are of the wrong size and I will be happy to resize them.

While your attention was drawn to Paris and daughter articles, why don't you plunge in and help me brush them up to reasonable standards, you may also perhaps want to discuss its nomination for Collaboration of the month#ParisCotM. Thanks in advance! PrinceGloria (talk) 05:42, 5 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hey PrinceGloria, thanks for your message. In this particular case, the user who added the banner is very experienced and after being reminded of the guidelines, has been making a huge number of amazing contributions. James Atalk 05:52, 5 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
James, thank you for taking the time to reply. I believe it should be our responsibility, as more experienced members of the community, to both correct all the mistakes newbies make and perform general housekeeping, as well as work on making them feel included and educate them on the rules. I was a complete newbie just a moment ago, but I had Wikipedia experience to know that there are rules, policies, guidelines, projects and so on that I should take a look at, so I managed to brush up my wikivoyaging quite quickly. Most users face a steep learning curve, as I remember mine at Wikipedia.
Secondly, the banner in question was quite obviously croppable, and it indeed took me 2 minutes to do that, Commons upload included (the rest of the time that passed was me having breakfast). With all due respect, it's one form of laziness vs. another.
Kind regards, PrinceGloria (talk) 08:38, 5 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Page banner

James, wondering if is it possible to middle-align the country name (page title) and flag image in the page banner. --Saqib (talk) 09:10, 10 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Quickbar

Just a reminder -- I don't think we should merge the page histories for Quickbar and Quickbar/working. LtPowers (talk) 13:26, 11 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Wow, maybe I should've read the new comments first. Thanks, I'll fix it now. James Atalk 13:28, 11 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Pagebanners, article templates

Hey, I saw you added pagebanners to the article templates. Has this been discussed? The issue is that pagebannerdefault will wind up getting added to all new destination guides regardless of their geographic location. That's not to say that we shouldn't do it anyway, but it's probably worth discussing (if it hasn't been already). --Peter Talk 19:58, 19 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hmmm, I didn't think discussion was required. We came to a consensus that pagebanners should be on every page in the mainspace, so I presumed that we want users who create new articles to include the pagebanner off the bat, and not have to bother including it themselves. Regarding defaults, I don't think it's a major concern that will upset or confuse anyone. To be honest, I personally think we've gone a step too far with current banner defaults, and only 3 or 4 would've really been necessary. James Atalk 01:01, 20 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
I've taken it off {{Disambiguation skeleton}} as none of the current disambiguation articles have banners. -- WOSlinker (talk) 11:14, 20 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
I wasn't aware of current usage, but Wikivoyage:Banner_Expedition#Usage states "The standard disambiguation banner File:Disambiguation banner.png should be used for all disambiguation pages." James Atalk 11:47, 20 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
I don't know that we have a strong consensus for the disambiguation banner... I personally think it's too much, but I think globe-trotter liked it. New York currently uses it. LtPowers (talk) 13:57, 20 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough. We should probably remove it from the expedition page until it's been confirmed by consensus. I personally like the banner, but agree it may not be necessary. James Atalk 13:59, 20 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
The integral horizontal ToC can be very useful in some contexts if there are quite a few choices of settlements in a variety of countries. --W. Franke-mailtalk 14:05, 20 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
The example you linked is well less than a page long; I don't think it's a good example of needing a ToC at all, let alone a horizontal one. LtPowers (talk) 19:28, 20 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps you usually use a big screen and a fast connection? On my tiny screen it is more than one screen long. --W. Franke-mailtalk 22:52, 20 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Even if it was more than one-screen long on your screen, I'm sure only incrementally and that a TOC hardly helps navigation. It may be worth adding the NOTOC tag to the bottom disambiguation template. James Atalk 01:22, 21 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure we should be designing for screens that show fewer than 14 lines. LtPowers (talk) 15:51, 21 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
I can understand and sympathise with that stance. However, bear in mind that the depth (or number of lines) of a screen, depend on its display width too. I use one of the most popular notebooks, the Acer Aspire one, and, under Firefox with a minimised header, our Nelson disambiguation page currently occupies more than 2 pages of my 31 available lines (not counting the common footer or the banner) --W. Franke-mailtalk 14:13, 31 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

User maps

Thanks for exhuming the Wikivoyage talk:Roadmap/Generated user maps topic again! This will, I believe, be a very important step forward and adds to WV's attractivity, too, when we manage. Sadly, my technical skills are not sufficient to be very helpful, but I would like to see the idea implemented. Danapit (talk) 17:49, 9 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

No problem Danapit. Hopefully we can see it implemented! James Atalk 01:58, 10 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

James, just for completeness of removing the pages with broken file links list, do you still need the page User:JamesA/UNESCO layout? Can it be deleted, blanked or the offending red link images commented out? --Traveler100 (talk) 11:25, 16 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Traveler100. I've deleted the page, so the redlinks will no longer be a concern there, but thanks for asking first. Good job on the cleanup! James Atalk 11:33, 16 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Australian info

Hi James, I need some info about Australia, do you have some spare time to discuss about it? Preferrably via IRC just to shorten the time needed. Thanks, --Andyrom75 (talk) 10:00, 3 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Myanmar

Seems that you are interested in visiting Myanmar. I created a Myanmar guidebook on wikivoyage in the community book section that I'm still updating. --Bananaplug (talk) 14:47, 31 October 2015 (UTC)bananaplugReply

Hi Bananaplug. Thanks for sharing your book with me! It looks good and I'll keep it in mind if I ever do get the opportunity to go to Myanmar. All the best with your editing and the book. James Atalk 12:07, 1 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
It's already in the community books section. I deleted the other one because it was an earlier version. --Bananaplug

Administrator status (Official Notice)

A similar message was also sent via e-mail.

Thanks for your service as a Wikivoyage administrator. As you may be aware, our Wikivoyage:Administrators policy indicates that administrators who have not edited on the English Wikivoyage in over two years should have their administrator flags removed. This is for account security purposes, not a reflection of a loss of trust or any disappointment.

It is in fact just under two years since your last edit (12 November 2016), but as we are contacting several inactive admins, you've been included.

As such, we will be removing your administrator flag on 7 November 2018. Should you wish to retain your status, simply come on back and make an edit! That resets the clock. And if you ever decide to return to Wikivoyage as an active editor, your administrator flag can be restored by request.

If you have any questions or concerns, let me know.
