Poor timing

[edit]

I appreciate your efforts to tag stubs such as Dianthus bicolor with {{sources}}. But you may find that you get accused of templating the regulars. In particular, editors may get peeved if a stub is tagged shortly after its creation, as they may still be working on the article, and especially if there were two or more sources already in the article. Also, a common behavior of returning sockpuppets is to rack up lots of edits by tagging, which raises suspicions in any case. So it would be better if you looked through pages at places such as WP:WikiProject Plants/New article listing, and start tagging from the bottom, which goes back about 14 days. Thanks and a question

[edit]

Hello. Thanks for this edit of yours. It was something I was going to take of myself after nominating the page for discussion, but I forgot. Looking back I probably could have just copy-pasted the → symbols into the Twinkle edit window, from somewhere else. The problem is I used Twinkle to tag the page and initiate the rfd. As far as could tell, while Twinkle will generate the arrow symbol at the top automatically, its edit window does not have the capability to insert additional special charters like → the way we can in the standard edit window.

Do you happen to know if TW does have that capability and I missed it. If it doesn't, do you think it's worth proposing at WT:TW the feature be added?

Thanks for your time. --DB1729 (talk) 18:43, 3 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@DB1729: The way I inserted it is by using wincompose, and pressing Right Alt + Right arrow + Right arrow.
I definitely think it's a great proposal to add a CharInsert menu to Twinkle, though. QuickQuokka [talkcontribs] 18:48, 3 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

In the future, don't post about such things in highly visible spots like the Teahouse; remove the information and contact the emergency/oversight/revdel folks privately. I don't know if there are any guidelines here about engaging with such editors - over at TVTropes, where I also hang out, we're told not do that at all, but of course WP's rules are different in many ways. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 18:54, 9 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Introduction to contentious topics

[edit]

You have recently edited a page related to the Arab–Israeli conflict, a topic designated as contentious. This standard message is designed as an introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially-designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

  • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
  • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
  • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
  • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
  • refrain from gaming the system.

Additionally you must be logged-in, have 500 edits and an account age of 30 days and are not allowed to make more than 1 revert within 24 hours on a page within this topic.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

Separate from the standard notice, I have closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Zionism, race and genetics (2nd nomination) as a disruptive nomination for reasons stated in the close itself. You are allowed to create a new nomination, but expected to engage with the arguments presented in prior recent discussions; a simple assertion that the article is not neutral (which is a weak argument for delete in any context) is not going to cut it after editors spent 25,000 words discussing it and coming down nearly 50/50 in the !voting. signed, Rosguill talk 13:37, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

AFDs

[edit]

Hello, QuickQuokka,

Please do not ever post a dozen AFD discussions one right after another over a short period of time. It only takes you a minute or two, using Twinkle, to start an AFD discussion but it can take other editors an hour or longer to try to investigate each article nomination, assess these articles and look for sources. You even cut and pasted the same nomination rationale in these nominations so it didn't take you much time at all to tag these articles and create these discussions. It's not fair to demand this much time from your fellow editors when you could easily space out your nominations and just do a couple AFDs a day.

Please consider the amount of time and effort other editors put into considering your deletion nominations and don't overwhelm the daily AFD log like this again. You might even consider withdrawing a few of these nominations and running them again in a few days or in a few weeks. Thank you for thinking about the care and time othe editors put into the AFD process. Liz Read! Talk! 05:20, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, QuickQuokka,
You should have not closed AFDs you opened unless you are withdrawing your nominations. This is not appropriate at all. I will decide tomorrow whether or not to revert all of these closures. This was not how AFDs are done. Liz Read! Talk! 07:49, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Liz, even though I !voted redirect in most of these, I do think they need to be reverted. Editors have found sources in other discussions (Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Southern Min Wikipedia and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Guarani Wikipedia). And even treating this as a WP:BOLD redirect, it somewhat confuses or bypasses the WP:BRD cycle that editors expect to rely on. —siroχo 08:01, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't close your own AfDs

[edit]

Hi, I noticed you've closed AFDs you opened, eg, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Kyrgyz Wikipedia. You should not be closing discussions you've opened, closing should always be done by an uninvolved editor (outside of withdrawing a proposal in an uncontroversial way). See WP:CLOSE. Thank you. —siroχo 07:55, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, QuickQuokka! Thanks for the welcome. Actually, I've been editing Wikipedia for over 20 years as an IP user, partly for personal reasons and partly for reasons of principle – I think every edit should stand or fall on its own merit, regardless of the editor's 'reputation'. I use a pseudo-signature (as below) merely in order to avoid confusion in conversations if/when my dynamic IP (which used to be static way back when) changes. But I do appreciate your thought and courtesy. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 51.194.81.165 (talk) 13:31, 16 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, you seem to be the author of {{Approx.}}. "~" is used in a lot of articles to mean approximately. "Approx." is more text than we'd typically want in infoboxes and tables. Do you think it would be useful if this template had a switch which made it show "~" instead of "Approx."? (Hohum @) 16:21, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Hohum:  Done. You just now have to add the parmeter tilde with a truthy value, such as {{approx.|1234|tilde=true}} (~1234). QuickQuokka [talkcontribs] 06:05, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Cojum dip requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band or musician that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator.
