License tagging for Image:Portnoy.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Portnoy.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Portnoy.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Portnoy.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

I have reverted the restoration of the material which you restored to this article. 1. Individual suspension of students is hardly encyclopedic. It happens at high schools all over the world all the time. It is a one time event that might be important to current students, but is hardly important in the history of the school. Based on my reading of WP:NOT#NEWS, that qualifies the event as "news": a single event of relatively limited notability (see point 2).

2. You noted that it is not likely to be challenged. I am challenging. There are no references to back up this event as being notable from reliable sources, and thus the event fails the verifiability requirements for inclusion. Based on this policy, as an editor, I am within my rights to question the validity of this story, which also violates the policy on requiring a neutral point of view. This section was clearly written from a students point of view, and does not give any credence to other potential points of view. In the absence of neutral, third party references, there is no way to establish this event as notable within the scope of the article.

I am not trying to be contentious, and don't lightly delete sections of articles unless I am pretty sure about the application of policy. If there is something I am missing, please let me know if I have made a mistake. LonelyBeacon (talk) 22:03, 21 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that you have restored a great deal of the uncited, unreferenced data that I removed from the article (some of which was written in a decided manner that violates wikipedia's policy on writing in a neutral point of view, and mention students and/or alumni who are decidedly not meeting wikipedia's policy on notability. Please take a moment and read the part of wikipedia's verification policy one where the burden of proof lies. Editors are well within their rights to challenge uncited and unreferenced claims, especially extraordinary claims, and remove them without comment. I was nice enough to let you know what I was doing as a courtesy to give you a chance to find references and restore any material that maybe you could find a reference for. You may also want to look at the list of what should not be in a school related article.
I will not engage in an edit war, but if this material is not referenced with reliable sources or removed soon, I will take this to Request for Comment, and allow the consensus of the community to hold sway, whichever way that is. As a suggestion to you, keep in mind that the school website will not really work as a reliable source for the award related material.
I know that you do not mean any harm whatsoever, but the big problem that I have encountered with school articles is the addition of far too much material that is not referenced, and usually is unreferencable. Wikipedia's policies regarding a lot of this is very clear.
Take a look at these links and think it over .... I know you do a lot of work around here, but I think you are including some information that really doesn't belong, and some information that without referencing needs to go.

I made some major additions to this entry this afternoon (15:17 May 18), realised that some further changes needed doing and went back into the piece. I was surprised to find that more or less everything had been undone by you and another person. I was very surprised. But I did notice that I had not signed in. Is this the reason? Hi ! I am new to wiki so i hope I'm typing this in the right spot! I'm reaching out to other users for help. As I understand it, I need to track down an established wiki editor to help me rid the first article i've created ("Stone and Stone")of the ugly box that was posted on top "This article has multiple issues....".

I know exactly how these complaints came about. In my ignorance on how wiki works, I gave myself the same nickname as the subject I was writing on and then a whole drama ensued, as it was assumed that I was my subject and that I was writing an autobiography! In truth, I am a huge comedy fan and biographer and was dipping my toes for the first time in wikipedia waters!

Any help or solutions you could provide me when you get the chance would be greatly appreciated! This poor little article certainly doesn't deserve such an ugly heading box because of my wiki-ignorance! Thank you in advance for your time!
