Hello

[edit]

I would like to know how to get a wiki page on myself, would you know how to do this? Mentallyhyp (talk) 00:05, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Mentallyhyp:. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and not a place to write about oneself. Please see Wikipedia:Autobiography. Subjects of encyclopedia articles must meet inclusion requirements with reliable sources which are unconnected with the subject and which provide verifiable information. Someone unconnected with the subject needs to have written a great deal about the subject. Thanks, -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 01:16, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team

Defending at ArbCom

[edit]

I'm curious as to your thoughts about the benefits of an administrator defending themselves in an ArbCom case. Marine 69-71 is the latest case, but far from singular. I'm not focusing on Marine 69-71 here. I don't see what benefit defending yourself brings. In essence, there are three options when an admin is brought before ArbCom:

  1. Ignore the case request. Result: get desysopped.
  2. Acknowledge the case, but don't defend yourself. Result: get desysopped
  3. Contribute to the case, defending yourself. Result: get desysopped

All three options result in desysopping, as history shows. Since getting desysopped is a foregone conclusion, the best possible way of managing such a situation is ignoring the case request as this results in the least amount of time spent on the pointless endeavour. Your thoughts? --Hammersoft (talk) 13:06, 29 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Acknowledge the concerns of the community. When those concerns are ill-founded, make the necessary explanations, clarifications, and corrections. When those concerns are well-founded, own the concerning behavior and make convincing assurances that the behavior will not be repeated. -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 16:33, 29 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
...which will result in them be desysopped. So, why bother making the effort and time expenditure? --Hammersoft (talk) 18:58, 29 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That is not at all true but whatever you want to think, think. -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 19:04, 29 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's not what I want to think. I'd rather there be fair, equitable outcomes for all parties at ArbCom. But, that's not remotely the case with ArbCom. In this general category of case, I've had one (at M6971's talk page) case be made known to me that resulted in something other than desysopping. That's 1, against lord knows how many that resulted in desysopping. It's just reality. --Hammersoft (talk) 19:59, 29 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"Those who seek power are not worthy of that power." - Plato. Or to be more modern about it, desysopping follows the same logic as blocking: delivered not as retribution, but to protect the project and other users from disruption and inappropriate conduct, and to deter any future possible repetitions of inappropriate conduct. Being desysopped is only a "punishment" to those who view it as such. Sirocco745 (talk) 07:16, 1 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sirocco745: good comparison. The advice I offer above is much like User:Deepfriedokra/dna. -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 07:21, 1 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you think the Marine arbcom case request is bad, you should see THIS -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 07:28, 1 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I was poking through the drama board when I noticed that second ANI thread first appear. That single admin recall request has 86 editors, 105 watchers, and about 8000 pageviews. If there's one thing you don't want doing numbers, it's the "this guy did a dumb" page, which is why I plan to keep my stupidity off-wiki! People forget, but the internet doesn't. AFCH comment template

[edit]

Something in your "please reconsider your spam, dearest newbie" AfC draft comment template is breaking the AfC template when you use AFCH. Or are you doing this manually? It's leaving the AfC comment properly, but it removes the draft submission template for some reason. Eg: [1]. -- asilvering (talk) 20:39, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Asilvering: argh thanks. bang goes that idea -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 20:43, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Robert McClenon, you use templates when you make AFCH comments pretty frequently, and it doesn't break anything. Any ideas what's going wrong here? -- asilvering (talk) 20:46, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Probably something to do with my on-screen keyboard. -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 20:48, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
User:asilvering, User:Deepfriedokra - I can see that the template that is mentioned here is more complex than any of my templates. I will take a look in a few hours, but I need to swim first. Robert McClenon (talk) 21:14, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In looking at the history of the draft, I see that the draft submission template simply isn't there after the message template is added. That is, the draft submission template is not being broken or interfered with but actually removed. The complex template may be beyond my level of skill, but I will take a look at it. What is the name of the template? Robert McClenon (talk) 03:28, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I copypasted in text from User:Deepfriedokra/del and trimmed as needed. -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 08:07, 12 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Deepfriedokra, I think I may have just figured this out by accident, typoing something else in an AFCH comment - if you don't properly close the template with }}, the AFCH script behaves... mysteriously. -- asilvering (talk) 04:09, 14 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

UTRS is not working

[edit]

Hello, the UTRS is not working. It seems like newer requests are answered but older requests are abandoned and not reviewed, including my request. I have waited for three months and tried other methods like emailing wikimedia stewards or chatting via irc unblock channel but those methods aren't replied, either. A wikimedia steward tells me to send a direct message here. Please don't consider this message as block evasion because there is seemingly no other way to contact an administrator on English Wikipedia. 113.190.54.159 (talk) 09:53, 15 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2024 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:10, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I am contacting you about this user above, given your very helpful updates on their talk page. I was considering contacting the admin who globally locked them about this, but given that she has stated she is busy during the week, I figured I'd bring it here. Do you think that, with the user achieving unblock, they should be globally unlocked? I typically try to stay out of administratively-oriented processes like this, but considering that I have been looking forward to the prospect of them returning after a standard offer period (see my comments from April on their talk page), I did want to reach out about this because of the unblock. Question

[edit]

Firstly, a huge thanks for unblocking me, I hope to show my capacity for constructive editing.

As a consequence of my earlier behavior, I have local (@enwiki) and global hard (include login, no email, no talkpage access). Should I file a request via UTRS for the IPBE flags (there's a chance I'll be locked out for a couple of days)? I get you're not a checkuser, though I'm not sure where to ask. 🇺🇲JayCubby✡ please edit my user page! Talk 15:51, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@JayCubby:, it looks like the IP address you are currently on is not blocked. The one you were using earlier is indeed blocked, but it looks like you've moved on and so won't be affected by that block. I don't think there's any further action required here. Note there's nothing I can do about a global block. --Yamla (talk) 17:19, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The one I'm currently on as I'm writing this (ends in .79) is a-OK. I haven't moved on from the one ending in .10 yet, I just waited until I connected to my secondary network to login lest I have to deal with that. I'll ask at Meta about the global block. Thank you very much! 🇺🇲JayCubby✡ please edit my user page! Talk 17:23, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Yamla: Yes! a 100,000th ticket party! -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 23:52, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Definitely on board for a 100,000th ticket party! Also, Asilvering, I default to not leaving notes about declined UTRS requests on talk pages. It's not particularly helpful when someone just found their way to UTRS before they found their talk page, for example. But I'll leave a note when it could be helpful for future context, for future unblock reviews on the talk page. For example, someone was just wasting the time of unblock reviewers on the talk page, lost access to the talk page, then made the same requests on UTRS. Or when they threatened us on UTRS. That sort of thing. --Yamla (talk) 10:47, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
