I've also taken the liberty of rearranging some of your images in the Featured picture categories: A lot were in geology, but, since they're synthetic, should really come under chemistry or (in one case) engineering. (We don't have a section for chemistry, so I went with "Other sciences"). Hope you don't mind. Shoemaker's Holiday Over 192 FCs served 10:36, 16 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nickel image

[edit]

I was looking at it and I understand his reasoning. To be hones, I was thinking the same thing myself when I did the initial change. A similar issue is with bismuth, and there it is more obvious. The Bi crystals look really pretty, but the infobox should have the best depiction of the element; oxides aren't ideal because although they do depict the fact that the metal gets oxidized easily, it distracts from the fact of how the metal should look like. In the Ni case, the green color is so distinct that it distracts and might confuse the reader. The best solution is to get the same image without the oxidation present and then everybody will win. (p.s.: can't wait for your next upload) Nergaal (talk) 22:48, 9 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Pm is that radioactive? Are there any images of the element around at all? Do you happen to know anything of the Po, Pa, and Ac images I have uploaded? Nergaal (talk) 11:40, 5 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, Pm is strong radioactive! And I know some images of Pm, Po, Pa and Ac in the german "Time-Life" book: "Die Materie". But not the matal form, only compounds. Our Tc image is from that book too. --Alchemist-hp (talk) 12:02, 5 December 2010 (UTC) P.S: please mail me a wiki email, then I can answer you more details ...![reply]
If that book is the MATTER book by Ralph Lapp (sorry, I don't speak German), then I regret to have to inform you that the Pm image there is actually Pm2O3! :-( Lanthanum-138 (talk) 12:26, 14 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, yes. That book is from Time-Life International. --Alchemist-hp (talk) 15:21, 14 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I uploaded those images some time ago: File:Pm oxide.jpg, File:Polonium.jpg, File:Actinium sesquioxide.jpg, File:Protactinium(V) oxide.jpg. Btw, Freywa would like you to get a picture of At to replace this picture. Materialscientist and I are rather doubtful you'd be able to get such a rare element, but just thought you'd like to know. Lanthanum-138 (talk) 03:09, 15 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The last five elements (Z ≤ 100) we do not have pictures of are Pm, At, Fr, Ac and Fm. Since these are all strongly radioactive, I doubt we will be able to obtain any pictures of them. Double sharp (talk) 11:17, 6 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry. I can't also help you (and Wikipedia). I think it simply isn't possible to take an image from an very very small amounts of this elements. No people on this world saw an visible amount of your asked elements. --Alchemist-hp (talk) 20:40, 6 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Pm and Ac are the most likely. A microgram sample of Pm was once obtained, but no pictures were taken. Actinium is described as "glowing in the dark with a pale blue light", so there may be a chance that this glow was photographed. Double sharp (talk) 06:28, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
OK, OK. I think Pm and Ac are perhaps possible, but no Fm, At, and Fr. The half-life are simply too short. --Alchemist-hp (talk) 07:52, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. I'll remove Fr, At and Fm from WP:ELEM/PIC. Another problem with Fm is that although the half-life of 257Fm is 100.5(2) days, it is very difficult to synthesize a large enough quantity of Fm (see the fermium article) to allow a picture to be taken. This leaves only Pm and Ac without images. Double sharp (talk) 11:02, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Please see the discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Elements#WP:ELEM/PIC. Double sharp (talk) 11:07, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Chemical elements

[edit]

I wanted to know where you got those elements from. In those formations they would seem very expensive. --Chemicalinterest (talk) 12:02, 7 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it is right. The most of my samples are rare and expensive. I'm collecting since >30 years. But I still have some samples for exchange to other collectors ;-) --Alchemist-hp (talk) 21:50, 7 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Don't give any to me. I am an amateur chemist and would turn your pretty crystals into colored solutions and ugly white powders. --Chemicalinterest (talk) 22:24, 8 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Macro photo advice

[edit]

Hello. I want to thank you for your advice regarding my coin photograph. I have looked through your image contribution history and realize I should take your advice seriously. I am really impressed with your contributions and strive to improve my own photography.

I want to retry that photo this time using a 1913 version of the coin. This one is not in a case but also in about ms-65 condition.

I have got a focus rail for my tripod and am going to use natural light instead of a flash. I have a remote trigger with radio control and am going to use the mirror lockup function. The tripod holding the camera is weighted down and the Minolta focus rail is heavy and smooth as butter with no perceivable play/wiggle.

I have a couple of gorilla lights which are full spectrum true white light but I am wondering if direct/diffused sunlight would give a more natural "golden" color? The rig will have to be setup just right to avoid the camera or stage from casting a shadow but I am thinking I can work around that with careful angling or mirrors.

I want the light to come from a shallow angle to give contrast to the details, direct lighting tends to make it look flat.

Any opinion on how best to light it?

The other thing I was wondering about is how to make a nice neutral background. It is difficult to mount the coin such that the background is distant and out of focus. Is there a material you can suggest that does not exhibit detail at macro levels?

My next attempt will be on a 1913 version of the same coin also in good condition, but this one is not sealed in a case so I have more options than the other one.

I know I am asking a lot but I have one last question. Is there a trick to aligning the coin with the depth of field plain? No matter how much I fiddle with my stage and the camera I always have focus drift along the coin. My depth of field is small but it is big enough to capture all of the shallow details in the coin. Should I just align the best I can and then use focus stacking?

Feel free to answer as few or many of these questions as you want as I know I am asking a lot at once.

Too long, didn't read: I am impressed by your photos. How should I light my coin? How do I get a neutral background with macro? How to I align my plain of focus? Chillum 21:53, 21 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@User:Chillum: I use withe/black glas plates as a background and/or simply smooth white paper. Light: please experiment with sunlight or daylight lamps/bulbs and use a lihght tent like this. Focus: perhaps a stack of 2-5 images. When you have more questions or photo raw material for a focus stack, so please ask me. I try to help you with my helicon focus software. --Alchemist-hp (talk) 01:04, 22 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you sir. I don't know when I will get around to it but it is on my list of things to do. Will get back to you once I have some preliminary results, I just now ordered the tent of eBay(same one but cheaper) so that will take a few weeks to get from China. Not sure what is the thing with COOH vs CO2H

[edit]

If you are planning to change a lot of formulas, then it is probably a good idea to consult and get some sort of consensus. In my world (academic research chemistry), we write carboxylic acids RCO2H, and my colleagues would view RCOOH as archaic. But it is not my view that counts but consensus. Just a thought. --Smokefoot (talk) 00:02, 16 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Smokefoot Of course RCO2H is right for organic compounds, (CH3COO) for "inorganic" salts. That's simple. --Alchemist-hp (talk) 00:17, 16 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Again, RCOO-M+ is archaic. Please read my response on my talk page. And be careful changing ChemBoxes. The boxes and the formatting are highly refined, and not the place for posturing. Talk to someone with a PhD. (from the past 50 years in the western world) before telling others how formula should be done and about some divide between "inorganic" and "organic", sounds positively medieval. --Smokefoot (talk) 12:29, 19 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Smokefoot ha, ha, ha. The result of all the imaginatively PhD's: we have a simple formula for sodium acetate:

Na(CH3COO), CH3COONa, Na(H3C–COO), Na(H3C–CO2), CH3CO2Na, Na(CH3CO2), Na(C2H3O2), C2H3O2Na, C2H3NaO2, NaOAc, NaAc .... and some more... Yeah and Ac isn't Actinium, no Ac is a fiction for an abbreviation for the Acetyl-group. Everybody can select his favorite one ... , that is a coloful chemistry ... ;-) Best regards, --Alchemist-hp (talk) 14:00, 19 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

See that is the catch, everyone cannot select his favorite one. In Wikipedia we strive for consistency and consensus as a selfless way of communicating; the alternative is childishness or anti-knowledge. But I get your message, unfortunately. --Smokefoot (talk) 14:12, 19 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Smokefoot Have you taken a look to all the other Acetates, Formates, Nitrides, ... ? I corrected some of this compounds similar to the others. Why are reverted me??? --Alchemist-hp (talk) 19:51, 19 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback granted

[edit]

Hi Alchemist-hp. After reviewing your request for "rollbacker", I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:New admin school/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! Widr (talk) 20:11, 9 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Chlorine template for NaCl?

[edit]

Hi, and thanks for thanking me on my edit of Ytterbium(III) sulfate. I am no chemist at all...only had a high school chemistry course, and that's it! Anyway, while going through certain elements, I came to the page for Sodium chloride, and I saw that there is no chlorine compounds template shown for that page. Surprised, I visited the chlorine compounds template page, looked into its edit history, and saw this curious comment: "Since chlorine is the anion in NaCl, it's not suitable for this template (that's reason why "fluorine compounds" template will never exist, and so on), even remembering NaCl is widely known" (dated October 23, 2010). I know NaCl is an ionic compound, but I don't understand the logic of this comment. Care to explain, or rebut this? My guts is telling me it is completely BS, but I'm no chemist...so I chose to do nothing but comment for now. --TheBlueWizard (talk) 02:28, 12 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@TheBlueWizard: the main is, we don't have a chlorides template, only a cat Chlorides and Metal halides. Sodium chloride is a subcat of the chlorine compounds. The chemistry for the chlorine compounds: are dificult: Ionic compound, Covalent bond, ... That's all. --Alchemist-hp (talk) 05:16, 12 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm...I see that you reverted some of my edits, deleting the templates. That's OK. You might want to take a look at Silicon tetrachloride (where I added chlorine compound template, and modified that template), Silicon tetrafluoride (where someone put a fluorine compound template, not me...I merely reordered the templates), Praseodymium(III) bromide (I added two templates), Ytterbium(III) fluoride (added fluorine template). Feel free to revert/correct them all. I now see it's pretty much a waste of my effort, so I would not add any more templates to chemical articles. --TheBlueWizard (talk) 02:50, 14 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Wooden table

[edit]

Hey Alchemist-hp, for the article Element collecting, would you be interested in providing an image similar to File:Wooden_periodic_table.jpg, just with even more elements? ~ ToBeFree (talk) 23:56, 15 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@~ ToBeFree unfortunately, no nice cupboard for a PSE available :-( --Alchemist-hp (talk) 16:42, 16 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Ta(OEt)5

[edit]

Dear Alchemist-hp, all similar compounds wich make dimers (AcOH, P2O5, TaCl5) are commonly described as monomer molecular formula. Read whole article about TaCl5, everywhere is used TaCl5 not Ta2Cl10 but TaCl5 also form dimers (as you may see on crystal structure). If you prefer dimer notation you should correct other reactions in this article, but remember that when you distill Ta(OEt)5 in a vapor you will find only monomers not dimers (refer boiling point which is rather for monomer not dimer which boil in higher temperature). In the publication cited in the article you may read about equilibrium so monomers are also present in solution. I think that using monomer notation is better for reaction record it is consistent with tradition and more understandable for younger readers who are taught to record inorganic formulas from oxidation states of each component (like Ta2O5). Mohawkite

Mohawkite is a rare rock consisting of mixtures of the elements arsenic, silver, nickel and copper, and the mineral skutterudite, with the chemical formula Cu3As up to Cu6As, and the most desirable material was usually found in white quartz matrix. Named after the Mohawk Mine in the Keweenaw Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan, where it was originally found, mohawkite has a hardness on the Mohs scale of 3.0 to 3.5 and a metallic luster. The rock's color ranges from brassy yellow to metallic gray, with some specimens having a blue or greenish surface tarnish. This nugget of mohawkite measures about 50 mm × 40 mm × 28 mm (2.0 in × 1.6 in × 1.1 in).

Element images

[edit]

Even after over a decade, I'm still a great fan of your element images.

Might I beg you for pictures of unoxidised calcium and barium? Since you've already done strontium, and it's very hard to find pictures for those reactive alkaline earths without oxides. :) Double sharp (talk) 15:50, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Double sharp Hi, I'd like to tro to make an image with calcium and barium in the next 2-3 month. Sorry for delay. --Alchemist-hp (talk) 20:30, 19 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, wonderful news! I look forward to it. :D Double sharp (talk) 01:02, 20 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
