Milo & Otis (Band)

[edit]

Milo & Otis is an American electronic music duo based out of Los Angeles consisting of producers KillaGraham (Graham Andrew) and NYMZ (Matt Nemethy). Milo & Otis' unique sound experiments with varying genres, including dubstep, hip-hop, trap, moombahton and electro-house.[1] The duo gained major traction in the EDM world after being offered a spot on Sonny Moore's (AKA Skrillex) Mothership tour in 2014. Milo & Otis have produced remixes for the likes of Skrillex, Brillz, Bro Safari, Flux Pavilion and Steve Aoki.

Early Life

[edit]

Graham Andrew (KillaGraham)

[edit]

Andrew grew up in North Carolina where he was exposed to music through band in high school, playing instruments like the french horn and trumpet. In 2006, he learned how to scratch from a record after watching a friend, which is how was initially exposed to DJing. Andrew went to college at UCF in 2007 pursuing an engineering degree; after taking an engineering internship two years later, he realized he hated it and decided to pursue music instead. [2] While in a dive bar in Orlando, Andrew met a DJ named Henry Fong and exchanged information with him. Fong contacted Andrew about a party that him and his friend (Nemethy) were throwing called "Riot Wednesdays". After showing up to a couple of their parties, Fong started offering for Andrew to DJ for a part of them, which is when Andrew started to pick up more side projects and random shows, going by the stage-name "KillaGraham". [3]

Matt Nemethy (NYMZ)

[edit]

Nemethy grew up in Orlando, Florida where he was exposed to music at a young age, playing the guitar and then listening to dance music.[4] At a party on day, Nemethy thought it was cool that the DJ was playing a song that he knew, so he started to hang out with him. Nemethy then borrowed this DJs turntables which led him to buy his own turntables and learn from him. Nemethy started to go to this DJs shows doing his visuals for him, which eventually led to Nemethy DJing himself. [2]

Music Career

[edit]

Defep

[edit]

In Orlando, KillaGraham, NYMZ, Henry Fong and their buddy DallasK all got together and created the DJ group known as "Defep". While they did make some music together and had a good time doing it, four people ended up being too many to DJ at once which caused the group to separate, allowing for Andrew and Nemethy to work together and "Graham and Nymz". KillaGraham moved out to LA and started to write music (mostly pop) for other people, while also keeping up with NYMZ and making music despite their distance from each other. KillaGraham convinced NYMZ to move out to LA with him after pointing out how well they clicked when making music together. [2]

Milo & Otis

[edit]

In 2012, KillaGraham and NYMZ created a remix to Wonderwall by Oasis and KillaGraham had the idea to call it "Milo & Otis"; NYMZ did not get the reference to the film, The Adventures of Milo and Otis, but still thought it was hilarious, so the name stuck. [2]

The Mothership Tour

[edit]

Milo and Otis' old friend, Henry Fong, came out with a song for free download called "stand up", which was taken off of free download when it was picked up by Skrillex's label, OWSLA. The team at OWSLA asked Fong for suggestions for artists to remix his songs, which is when he suggested Milo & Otis. Through this experience Skrillex and Milo & Otis' agent exchanged information, eventually leading to Skrillex offering the duo the opportunity to go on his Mothership Tour in 2014 to promote his new album "Recess".
