Who I am

[edit]

Name: Archie Wayne Mangold II

Date of Birth: December 8, 1973 in Pekin, IL, USA

Address:

PO Box 116
Oskaloosa, IA 52577-0116 USA
(street address witheld for privacy reasons).

Occupation: Paper route (Oskaloosa Herald); former employee of APAC Customer Services (1995,1996-2002), former editor Literary: The Magazine of Writing (1990-1999), reporter and editor for The William Penn Chronicle (2004-2005).

Education:

Inducted into Iowa Beta chapter of Alpha Chi (Region IV, Chapter 63), December 2004
BA journalism, minor in sociology from William Penn University, May 8, 2005, Summa Cum Laude
Currently considering graduate schools

Sexuality: Heterosexual male, single (never married)

Political affiliation: American Reform Party, and thus I am a member of the radical center. I voted twice for Ross Perot and twice for Ralph Nader. I question the two-party system and recognize the necessity of third parties. I am pro-life beyond anti-abortion; my views are close to the Consistent Life Ethic, although I still subscribe to St. Augustine's just war theory.

Religous affiliation: Lutheran (Protestant Christian), raised in LCMS, ALC & ELCA churches, occasionally attend a WELS congregation. However, sectarian differences confuse me. At the moment I consider myself a nonsectarian Lutheran.

Churches I have attended:

  • Saint John's Lutheran, Sand Prairie Township (Green Valley, IL): LCMS, 1973-1984. I was [[baptism|baptized here.
  • Saint Paul's Lutheran (Hedrick, IA): ALC/ELCA, 1984-1991. I was confirmed here. Sadly, this church no longer exists.

Other philosophy: I consider myself enlightened, and while I'm fairly bright I'll admit I'm not all that Bright. My favorite secular philosopher is Socrates.

IQ: 129 (tested March 1992).

Other identities: As a musician I am Vanilla Shadoe. As a speaker I am Ice Stevens. I swear on a stack of holy texts of your choosing that I have never been a Wikipedia sockpuppet. Sockpuppet allegations have thrown around too much lately anyway,

The Centrist Fellowship

[edit]

The Centrist Fellowship is a group of editors dedicated to promoting cooperation, reducing binary thinking, reflecting scholarship in an NPOV manner, and promoting progress, beginning with the Jesus article. The charter members include an Atheist, an Agnostic, and two Lutherans. See User:Archola/The Centrist Fellowship for more details. Disclaimer: This is meant to be compatible with Wikipedia:WikiProject Countering Systemic Bias, and does not imply POV-pushing.

May the Force be with you!

[edit]

Star Wars is a good allegory for the Christian faith. It reminds us that there is a difference between the Force, the Dark Side of the Force, and those who just don't have the Force. Those without the Force will be skeptical. Atheists are not necessarily evil; they just don't have "faith." It is important to remember that even a good Jedi can be tempted to the Dark Side. Anger, fear, hatred, suspicion, prejudice, incivility, vandalism, sockpuppets, edit wars, ineffective voting, binary thinking...these are all paths to the Dark Side, and must be avoided.

Metaphysical Poker

[edit]

Einstein was right. God does not play dice, he plays poker! Let's watch...

  • "I would rather believe in a god who may not exist, than risk the wrath of a God who may exist." (Based on Pascal's wager.)
  • "God would see through a cheap trick like that." (Monty Python's wager, as submitted by SOPHIA.)
  • "I don't know if God exists. I'll just wait and see." (Agnostic's wager.)
  • "It is better to live your life as if there are no gods, and try to make the world a better place for your being in it." (Atheist's Wager.)
  • Religion ups the ante (submitted by Avery W. Krouse.)
  • God raises the stakes.
  • Interruption: Sorry, but we're out of snacks. Can somebody make a run to the store? (submitted by Avery W. Krouse.)
As Kenny Rogers sang, "You've got to know when to hold 'em!" (submitted by CTSWyneken.)

Aphorisms

[edit]
  • Those who butt heads are named for that action. (Original; March 2, 2006).
  • Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. (John 8:32; also Alpha Chi motto).
  • Examine your convictions. (Just popped in my head the evening of 02/24/2006).
  • The trouble with striving for the center is that sometimes you get caught in the middle. Know when to withdraw. (Personal critique of my own political philosophy).
  • You cannot claim a right that you are not prepared to grant to others. (As per SOPHIA).
  • When arguments get heated, keep this in mind.
  • I have made it my mission to help ensure that the various Jesus articles are consistent, accurate and well-organized, while respecting all viewpoints. The topic has proven contentious. Jesus Christ! (But feel free to leave a message.)
  • I maintain that a universe without God is as illogical as a book without an author. (Based on the Theistic axiom (Deus ergo universalis), and perhaps argument from design)
  • I assert that the "god" that the Atheist does not believe in is not God.

You scored as Cultural Creative. Cultural Creatives are probably the newest group to enter this realm. You are a modern thinker who tends to shy away from organized religion but still feels as if there is something greater than ourselves. You are very spiritual, even if you are not religious. Life has a meaning outside of the rational.

--- Comments:

  • "Tends to shy away from organized religion" is inaccurate. I tend to shy away from disorganized religion. I'm very much a committed Lutheran; but with the multiplicity of Lutheran sects, who is to say which are the "true" Lutherans? More broadly, I find it hard to reconcile "One holy Christian and apostolic church" with "the sin of unionism." Like the hymn says, "We are one in the [Holy] Spirit, we are one in the Lord, and we pray that all unity will one day be restored."
