Weight loss

[edit]

I think there should be a discussion about her weight loss, because Missy has become an inspiration to people who have weight problems and want to start living healthy. --84.188.190.239 15:48, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree. I think this page should focus more on career/biography. Unless you can poll people to see if she really is an inspiration, how do you know who she affects? (MaytrixInk)
I don't know about how inspiring she is but I think the sudden weight loss is noteworthy 198.6.46.11 20:35, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Appears to have regained quite a bit of it. Still, I came to this page looking for some information about those fluctuations, so I'd argue it's worth including, particularly if she's commented on it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.164.44.4 (talk) 22:56, 7 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
She never did regain any of it. The problem is inaccurate photo dates. A good example is the photo which currently appears on her wikipedia page here which states it was taken in 2010. It may have been uploaded to flickr in 2010, but was probably taken a good 5 or 6 years prior to that.FeverMC (talk) 13:15, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hip-Hop producer?

[edit]

What hip-hop production has Missy Elliott done outside of her own (which she just recently assued from Timbaland)? Nearly every track I can think of that she's produced (and there are a lot) is an R&B record. --FuriousFreddy 14:43, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reply: Well, for one, she produced "Lose Control" on her own. Also, she produced two tracks for Trina (No Panties and Rewind That Back). While the songs may feature some singing, the main 'method of expression' is rapping, which I would call hip hop production. But yes, indeed, she does produce more R and B songs than hip hop. Tonprince 04:12, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

she also produced "lady marmalade"(with rockwilder)for the moulin rouge soundtrack(performed by christina aguilera, pink, mya and lil kim)which is her first number 1 hit on the billboard hot 100.

jazmine sullivan's "need you bad" which is jazmine's first number 1 song on the billboard hot r&b/hip-hop chart.so she has produced hits. Smokiewight (talk) 01:04, 10 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mixed Response To Supa Dupa Fly?

[edit]

I've only read a few reviews of the album, but the ones I read said it is the best female hip-hop album ever released.

improving the article

[edit]

The article is interesting but it reads too muchlike a list of what she did. Can someone who knows about this say something ( from interviews perhaps) of WHY she produced this sort of music on this sort of theme, and/or what the critics thought at different stages... Child dancer

[edit]

Who is that white girl who appears in a few of Missy's videos? She looks to be 10 or so, and appears in "Gossip Folks", "I'm really hot", "Work it" and usually has pigtails? I thought she might be the director's kid or something, but they're by different directors... Is she a friend of Elliott's? Also, Elliott seems to use kid dancers in her videos often, is there a reason? Identity0 12:11, 30 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

her name is Alyson Rae Stoner and shes so sick with it if youv seen her break it down24.77.69.29 03:36, 25 January 2007 (UTC)hope[reply]

Wow. She's so "sick with it". That's an insanely ridiculous response to the above question. The name would've sufficed. (MaytrixInk)

Videos and Hype Williams

Correct spelling

[edit]

If you are interested in finding and correcting instances in the rest of Wikipedia where her name is spelled wrong, I made this:

Name spelled correctly Name not spelled correctly Comments
Missy Elliott Missy Elliot
Missy Eliott
Missy Eliot
Two "L"s, two "T"s.

KConWiki (talk) 21:33, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Despite the 12-year-old entry above, Elliott is still misspelled as Elliot (with one 't') in several places in this article, including the summary that appears in search results.

Fixed. There remain mis-spellings in some references, but that's because the source has misspelt it. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 18:24, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Upcoming work

[edit]

The upcoming work stuff needs to be merged with the details under the Block Party section, since that covers all the recent & current events occurring especially about Elliott's Party album, the upcoming work section is just unnecessary and seems out of place. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.115.168.7 (talk) 18:01, 9 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

past abuse

[edit]

if i may ask, why isn't the abuse by her cousin included? she talked about that in vh1's behind the music documentary. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Minimaldiva (talkcontribs) 15:28, 20 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article will be expanded and improved very soon. Because this event is in relation with her charity work in Break the Cycle it will likely be merged with "Personal life". WillieLimpD (talk) 17:36, 13 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe she was abused by her cousin and spoke openly about it on vh1, and if so, there should be proper documentation of it here. However, what's listed as a source for that info is incorrect. The http://www.theguardian.com/theobserver/2001/aug/05/life1.lifemagazine7 article mentions absolutely nothing about her cousin sexually abusing her.FeverMC (talk) 13:15, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Current photo desperately needed

[edit]

As of October 2014, the photo used currently of Missy Elliott looks to be more than 10 years old. It looks nothing like Missy. I know the photo is captioned as being from 2010, but that's impossible because Missy hasn't been overweight in about 8 years, maybe longer. The photo http://www.flickr.com/photos/sakena/4821450279/ is from Flickr and when a photo is uploaded to Flickr it always shows "taken on" with the upload date, so today you could load a pic from 20 years ago and it would have "taken on October 16, 2014". It's up to the user to note the correct date. Certainly someone out there has a current photo of Missy which is not restricted.FeverMC (talk) 13:50, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Alleged sexual abuse not properly sourced

[edit]

Under Early Life, it currently states, "Elliott's childhood was strongly affected by domestic and sexual abuse caused by her father and cousin. As a child, she refused to stay over at any of her friends' homes for the fear that she would return and find her mother dead.[4]" and the source is supposedly the "Missy in action" article from the Observer online http://www.theguardian.com/theobserver/2001/aug/05/life1.lifemagazine7 however, the article mentions only domestic abuse by the dad and absolutely nothing about sexual abuse from him or a cousin. The only mention of a cousin is that Missy is afraid of flying insects because a cousin was stung in the eye. The way the sentence is written now, it also implies Missy's father sexually abused her which is not mentioned nor even implied in that article. I intend to remove the part about sexual abuse and the cousin in the first sentence so it simply reads, "Elliott's childhood was strongly affected by domestic abuse caused by her father."FeverMC (talk) 14:23, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Awful choice of photo

[edit]

Some autist chose an old, out of focus picture of Missy at the top of the page. We can do better than this.

The current photo is awful, but it's the best we've got that can be used according to Wikipedia's licensing. If any can obtain a better one that may be used (i.e. not copyright) then please feel free to replace it. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 15:55, 5 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Here's a better photo that I found on creative commons and made square: https://www.flickr.com/photos/7803956@N04/20409319589/in/photostream/

However, I haven't posted enough to upload the file myself. Anyone else is welcome to do so!

Six platinum albums or five?

[edit]

The article claims that she has six albums that went platinum; I count five (one of which was double platinum), plus a single. Can someone help clarify? I could just change it to five, except I don't know the validity of the rest of that statement, saying that she's the only female rapper to achieve that many platinum albums.

~JAR — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jazzinjake (talkcontribs) 05:34, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Jazzinjake The single that went platinum was technically an album, it just only had one song in it. Jacobmccordacademy (talk) 20:26, 26 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

East West America Records.

[edit]

Recently, on the Da Real World article, I've taken out "East West America" as the label that released the album since on every album credits Da Real World was released by Elektra Records and not East West America so now, can we take it out of the artist biography? There's no concrete source that tell us that she was once signed to them. Iambacknimbetter (talk) 00:29, 25 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Ellen show appearance

So I know that this shouldn’t go the filmography table, but probably in another section.

But could someone please include her guest appearance on the Ellen show. It may not be that important but worth including a small amount of information about this. 184.54.163.113 (talk) 01:24, 26 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Queen of Rap

[edit]

"Queen of Rap" on the lead
recent arguments against were

  • 'most of them are from the early to mid 00s': 9 of the sources are from 2015-present, just added more
  • 'Most critics and the public as of recent..' : there isn't a metric to calculate multigenerational general public's perception. & critics are calling multiple women Queen nowadays.
  • 'Should only be in one lead for other artist': Titles are not exclusive nor essential to only one person. It isn't a Presidential position.

(cc: @Kanyfug:)

Cornerstonepicker (talk) 23:51, 3 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

• while you could argue that there is no metric to calculate the public's perception on someone, Missy isn’t generally known as the "Queen of Rap", nor has she ever really embraced the title. Whereas Lauryn Hill for instance has been called the "Queen of Hip Hop" by Time Magazine and the Academy of Achievements, and Lil Kim has also been called "Queen of Rap" by multiple outlets. But the reason those titles aren’t in their leads are because they aren’t generally known by those titles, which brings me to my next point...

• The title being in the lead should be reserved for artist that are known by the title. For instance Michael Jackson is undisputedly known as the "King of Pop". However others have been called the title including Justin Bieber/Timberlake, The Weeknd and most notably Bing Cosby before him. But it’s not in any of those artist lead because they are generally known for being that. It’s nothing wrong with mentioning it in the legacy section but I’m not sure if it belongs in the lead. Another example of this is Madonna and Janet Jackson. Kanyfug (talk) 15:39, 4 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Also a solution could be changing the title to "First Lady of Rap", as that is a title that has only been given to Elliot.

@Cornerstonepicker Kanyfug (talk) 15:46, 4 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

There's not much to debate here. The article says she has been referred to as the "Queen of Rap" and there are sources to show this. End of discussion really. Debate about how this title compares to how others are known is irrelevant, and amounts to original research. It is not a real position, is a matter of opinion, and isn't only available to one person at a time. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 18:26, 4 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

She graduated from Manor High School in 1990. In 1993 it became known as Wilson Woodrow High School. It then returned to being known as Manor High School in 2021.
