Source on branding history and freeze branding

Cool new article if someone wants to incorporate its content (with footnotes, preferably) into the article. http://www.thehorse.com/ViewArticle.aspx?ID=8616

Animal welfare issues

[edit]

I'm surprised that the article has no section addressing animal welfare concerns surrounding hot iron branding. I know nothing about this subject, but I'm sure such concerns must have been raised, even in the macho ranching cultures of North America and Australia. Can anyone add some info? --Ef80 (talk) 11:48, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It's indirectly mentioned in the freeze branding section. Main trick will be NPOV tone and proper sources. Montanabw(talk) 15:30, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Seconding this. I assumed that the practice would be banned in most western countries since multiple decades ago (for obvious reasons), and came to Wikipedia to check this. Surely there must be at least an ongoing debate that should be included in the article (similar to the fox hunting article, for example)? 212.85.88.113 (talk) 09:47, 20 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Agree. That's an exclusive topic that merits a separate section in the article. Will try my best to include it once I find sources. Rasnaboy (talk) 11:59, 20 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Not illegal at all. Still very common. Montanabw(talk) 09:16, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I did a bit of cleanup on that section. Some good research, but I looked over the articles and made some tweaks to be more in line with what the studies actually said. Want to be careful not to be cherry-picking the data for POV purposes. I would be interested in knowing if there really is much of a debate over branding, it seems like an issue that’s low on the priority list for the animal rights folks. Fox hunting gets more publicity because it’s all wrapped up with issues of social class, as do other issues like fur trapping. But taking on the beef industry is a little different kettle of fish...
