anyone else here from JP?

I am. -- WikidSmaht (talk) 08:26, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, me too. I work with the Jamaica Plain Historical Society (www.jphs.org). -- Charlie Rosenberg 5:12, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

Name

[edit]

Wasn't Kuchamakin the regent for the young Chickatawbut? Kuchamakin wasn't actually sachem.

Lesbian Stuff

[edit]

Ok, this needs a rewrite on the Lesbian areas. Most people have no idea what a "sapphist" is, it's not in any current use, and this isn't meant to be a public flyer for lesbians to move to JP. If for whatever reason it's another gay location, fine. However, don't start using subjective terms like "populist" and "funky" (especially not funky) to sell the neighborhood. This isn't Re/Max.

MSTCrow 07:04, 23 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
While I don't particularly see a probly with the word "Sapphist", I do agree about the advertisement tone of the paragraph. Not sure what to do about it, but I'll have a go. - WikidSmaht (talk) 08:26, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

History

[edit]

My mother lived and worked in JP in the 60s and 70s, she saw hundreds of poor displaced families when the I-95 corridor was built. Can anyone elaborate on the socio-economic impact? -- WikidSmaht (talk) 08:26, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Did they use block busting? Can't say I'm surprised, though, Boston isn't exactly the city on a shining hill.

Green Line Controversy

[edit]

Edited a line citing the MBTA "dragging its feet" to be more professional-sounding
Kether83 14:45, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Does this article seem a little slanted?

[edit]

Parts of it seem negative (see discussion of gentrification), and hardly objective at all. Am i the only one who thinks this?

No, the "so-called" professional, activist, and artist shit needs to go. matt kane's brain 16:21, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

GLad to hear it-- I'd hate to change something nobody else agreed on. I also think continually pointing out how the professionals and such are suburban-born is a little strange-- a huge chunk of the BOston area is suburban-born, and a huge chunk of every city in America is as well. It's part of how cities work. The comments on it in this article seem judgemental, and also irrelevant. Agree?

Yeah. As an aside, it makes conversations easier to follow if you (a) sign your comments with ~~~~ and (b) You use a : to indicate a new section.

Ah, sorry, I'm new at this.--Philbars 19:17, 12 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed - I completely agree. Cwinder 10 March 2007

I see this page as needing some serious rewriting, inluding structural changes. As much as I'm interested in the beer brewery information, it's too long for an article this size. I don't recall any discussion of the importance of church parishes in JP - churches were a huge part of the social life of the community. The building of the train line - now the Amtrak line - is ignored. Some of the "sections" are two sentences long - not long enought to make a section worth while. I'll give it a try and propose some major changes. MarkinBoston 03:54, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that the brewery section needed to be shortened. I think, however, you have made it too short. In one of your posts, you mentioned you were going to bring some of it back. Perhaps you haven't gotten to that, yet. Cwinder 21 August 2007 —The preceding signed but undated comment was added at 03:52, August 22, 2007 (UTC).

Major changes

[edit]

I've made some major and minor changes to this page. My aim is to remove unnecessary detail, (all the bus lines) add relevant information (public libraries), remove POV type writing (the Great Streetcar Debate) and develop a proper history of dear old JP. I'm still working on the history - it will come soon. I hope the page reads a little clearer now as it is. More changes to come. MarkinBoston 20:47, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Monument photo added

[edit]

I decided to try the monument photo at full size rather than thumbnailed. It's probably the most notable scene in Jamaica Plain, so I think it deserves the emphasis. I'll be adding more pictures, but I'll thumbnail them for economy. Comments welcome. MarkinBoston 20:51, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Colonial Era

[edit]

I just added the Colonial Era section - I'll be following with with another similar section for the 19th century soon. MarkinBoston 00:43, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Revolution to Annexation

[edit]

Added new section - more to come. MarkinBoston 02:25, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

There's a link in the Name section that has a link that's showing the markup language. I don't know how that happened - it wasn't like that the last time I looked. Any explanation? MarkinBoston 04:25, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed. MarkinBoston 19:32, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mary Baker Eddy & Forest Hills?

[edit]

I was surprised to see Mary Baker Eddy listed as a notable resident. I thought I was familiar with all the places she lived. Is this a mistaken reference to her last residence at 400 Beacon Street in Chestnut Hill Brookline? clariosophic 03:25, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think maybe she is buried at Forest Hills Cemetery - that's kind of a resident. :) Feel free to change it. MarkinBoston 05:02, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No, she's buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge. clariosophic 11:36, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I removed her name until someone comes up with a reference. MarkinBoston 14:15, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Added history section JP: Boston Neighborhood

[edit]

It looks too big to me, but I left out a lot to get it down to that size. Hey, JP was a busy place in those years. It wouldn't kill me to see it edited down some. MarkinBoston 05:06, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Urban Renewal Undo

[edit]

I undid the Undo. I had integrated some of the information in the immediatly predeeding paragraphs. The section you replaced has two statements flagged for lack of citation, and the writing is not clear. Building were not torn down because the area was deemed blighted - there was nothing wrong with the housing in the area, it certainly wasn't a slum. My Aunt and Uncle lived in a house that was torn down on Everett St., so I knew it well. Any thing that is not included in the end of the previous section can be added to the Urban Renewal section - like the supermarket development on the Plant Shoe site and the festival without using Undo. MarkinBoston 02:59, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Plans

[edit]

I've pretty well rewritten much of this page. I'm planning to take some text out of the "JP enters the 20th century" and put it in a new section for the mid-late 20th century. That will end the History section, and the "Present Day" section might get a few more lines. This may take a little time, because I'll have to get references for things like the Hispanic immigration to JP and the busing years. MarkinBoston 03:15, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

References in the History section

[edit]

Please note: much of the information in the history sections is taken from a single source - the Local Attachments book that is cited multiple times. Anything not cited to another source can be assumed to be taken from that book. Citing it any more often withing the text would be overkill.MarkinBoston 16:08, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Need better Photos

[edit]

MarkinBoston user:MarkedinBoston has made a valient effort to improve this entry. Overall, he has done an excellent job. Unfortunately, his photography skills / photo selections could be improved. There were some excellent, historic photos on this sight that have been removed and replaced with small, low quality, camera-phone-like snapshots. I would encourage him to repost some of those which have been removed and hope others will post high quality images that may not have appeared in the past or may have been lost. cwinder 23:44, 21 August 2007.

Each picture has its associated data on its page - none are "camera-phone" quality. Which pictures are you referring to? And which historic photos? MarkinBoston 22:02, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Boundary map

[edit]

A modern map showing neighborhood boundaries (such as they are) would be useful. For example, plotting the Jamaica Plain BTD parking district would be one helpful indication. The old map doesn't really show boundaries; it's just generally cropped to show the area. -- Beland (talk) 16:49, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Notable Residents

[edit]

The current notable residents section lists four individuals: John Buckley (b.1964 Carpenter), Gabe Langfur (b.1969 Trombonist, musician), Kenneth Reed (b.1964 Womanizer, Independently weathly), and Sylvia Plath (b.1932 Poet, novelist, and short story writer).

Obviously the list format is a little frowned-upon for wikipedia articles, but more significantly, Sylvia Plath is the only one of these four "notable" enough to have her own WP article. Mr. Langfur does appear multiple times on the first results page of a google search for his name, and he seems to be a fairly successful bass trombonist. Mr. Buckley and Mr. Reed, however, cannot be found anywhere with confidence by someone who is not one of their friends (this is partially due to the commonness of their names, but also due to the lack of description in the post as to why they are of importance to the lay reader). Since no one reading the article who does not already know of their significance gains from their inclusion, these two need to be removed or their contributions need to be improved (at least say that John Buckley is a "Boston-area carpenter" (if he is) who built such-and-such notable houses in Jamaica plain or runs a popular cabinetry business or something). Also, regardless of whether he is or not, Mr. Reed's descriptions certainly make his inclusion sound like a joke.

Since two persons does not really make for a full section on notable residents, I suggest that the section be removed (with my condolences to any of the listed individuals), and that a brief mention of Sylvia Plath be worked into a different section. If anyone has contributions to make towards the descriptions of the current list, or if more notable residents can be added (didn't Mayor Curley live in Jamaica Plain? On the current Jamaicaway?), then the section might be salvaged. --Dgianotti (talk) 18:03, 20 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Added a number of historic residents (recognizing that some might want the list to feature current, living residents -- if so, please add them! When there is more than one, I would not be saddened at all to see the deceased ones removed), and removed Mr. Buckley and Mr. Reed (with my apologies to each of them). If an editor feels that they should be re-included, please be sure to add a description that ties them to something of (at least) wikipedia's level of notability (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:N for ideas of what is generally considered "notable"), and preferably a keyword that would suggest to readers how to learn more about them. Thanks. --Dgianotti (talk) 18:36, 20 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What the heck happened to this list? There used to be many more people on it - not included those mentioned above? It looks like someone deleted the entire section, and then someone started over again. I'll see what I can do reconstructing it.

MarkinBoston (talk) 20:48, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I added Jessica Valenti, who was ultimately removed because someone thought she didn't belong with all the historic figures...just because she's still alive and may have political views different than those editing does not mean she is not notable. added again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.118.209.72 (talk) 03:35, 25 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I apologize for deleting the Jessica Valenti entry again without coming here first to discuss it. That I am deleting it has nothing to do with her being alive or having "different political views". I don't care what her politics are. In fact, I have no idea what they are, and that's kind of the point. As fine of a writer as she may be, she just doesn't have a tenth of the cachet of the others in the Notable Residents section. That much is obvious, so, with all respect due to you as a fellow editor, I suspect your desire to include her has been determined by your own political sympathies. 76.105.168.162 (talk) 17:49, 21 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Whereas she may not have "a tenth of the cachet" of those others listed, she's done plenty of notable, well-known work, and is a resident of Jamaica Plain. She blogs, has written numerous books, is releasing a documentary, was named one of Guardian's "Top 100 Women" and was recently interviewed by Anderson Cooper. I don't see the problem as listing her as "notable", seeing all the notable work she has done. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.217.193.181 (talk) 23:48, 20 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Commercial Businesses in JP

[edit]

Should there be a mention of the long time grassroots efforts to keep large commercial businesses out of JP? With the press that the Whole Food's move into JP is getting there are plenty of sources talking about previous efforts of residents to keep these types of businesses out. I also do not see mention of the proposed I95 route from a few decades ago that JP residents successfully got moved out of JP. I think these are interesting and relevant events. I do no mind writing something up, but would like to hear some support or opposition before putting the time in. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thevandaley (talkcontribs) 14:23, 3 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know that there has been any such long time efforts to keep large businesses out of JP. WalMart and Home Depot haven't exactly been knocking on the door. And the response to Whole Foods suggests that such effort depends on the social cache of the particular business.

The I-95 project had a major effect on JP, and should be covered more. There's an Alan Lupo book that could provide source information. The anti-SouthWest Corridor activities in JP were actually quite small, and mostly aimed at getting the highway depressed rather than a raised structure. It's the harm done by the project that should be discussed - loss of homes, depressed property values, arson, etc. MarkinBoston (talk) 17:56, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
