Request for a list of works

[edit]

Perhaps a list of works that incorporate elements from this mythos would be appropriate? Or perhaps a list of works that 'define' the mythos?

To anyone who may be interested, this content was originally intended to be used with tables included in the articles Cthulhu Mythos deities, Elements of the Cthulhu Mythos, Books in the Cthulhu Mythos, Characters of the Cthulhu Mythos, and Extraterrestrial places in the Cthulhu Mythos. -- œ 18:38, 4 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Now recruiting

[edit]

I'm looking for participants for a possible new wikiproject H. P. Lovecraft, to tag and improve articles relating to the horror writer. Ftaghn!--Auric talk 09:59, 17 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

structure of articles

[edit]

We have Cthulhu Mythos, Cthulhu Mythos deities, and Elements of the Cthulhu Mythos.

The supposed main article is Chtulhu Mythos, but that's only a stub that barely scratches the surface. And there's considerable overlap between the Cthulhu Mythos deities and Elements of the Cthulhu Mythos articles. And then there's List of Cthulhu Mythos characters.

Apart from the cleanup tags on individual articles, and the poor sourcing to separate encyclopedic content from pure trivia, here are a number of additional notes that relates to the structure and organization of the entire set of articles (and therefore easily overlooked on any one page). I'm sure there are even more problem areas.

  • It's not clear at all which article contains the encyclopedic entry for each entity. It's taken for granted that "characters" mean humans, not deities (or "monsters" which we somehow call "species" as if that was any clearer).
  • Elements of the Cthulhu Mythos appear to be written when Cthulhu Mythos deities was spread over several articles. It makes little sense to link repeatedly to what now is the same destination.
  • The "Great Ones" are simply enumerated, with a link to Dreamlands, which then do not even mention them(!)
  • Why do we have an expansive Cthulhu Mythos deities#Table of Great Old Ones when we also have a List of Great Old Ones?
  • Elements of the Cthulhu Mythos#Other supernatural beings appears to be a garbage pile of leftovers that nobody could categorize - and no casual reader will ever find... (I wouldn't be surprised to find entries here that are already discussed elsewhere)

All in all, I'd say this is a godawful mess. CapnZapp (talk) 11:24, 27 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

CapnZapp, You are right. In fact, on Polish Wikipedia we have a brand new pl:Mitologia Cthulhu, sourced to a (Polish) academic work, whichI think is better than what we have here. This still has too much fancrufty OR and too little academic analysis :(
Regarding the two lists, please see Talk:Cthulhu_Mythos_deities#Two_lists_of_Great_Old_Ones_need_merging. As for Elements of the Cthulhu Mythos, this is an even bigger mess that probably needs AfD. I may start one soon. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 07:04, 26 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

What about the other stuff?

[edit]

I'm pretty sure the Cthulhu Mythos contains more than just deities. Like the Mi-Go, the Yithians, etc.

Please have a look at the See also section, Template:Cthulhu Mythos and especially Elements of the Cthulhu Mythos#Non-human species - there you will find the other stuff. What to name how and where to put what is a currently unsolved problem, see the notice just above. Daranios (talk) 16:20, 21 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Daranios It is, which is why I proposed a merge below you may want to comment on. Also ping User:CapnZapp and User:Auric. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 03:58, 27 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
