Liptovská Kokava (Slovak: [ˈliptɔwskaː ˈkɔkaʋa]; Hungarian: Kokava) is a village and municipality in Liptovský Mikuláš District in the Žilina Region of northern Slovakia, at the foot of Kriváň, Slovakia's symbolic and often considered most beautiful mountain.

History

In historical records the village was first mentioned in 1469, at the foot of Kriváň, Slovakia's symbolic and often considered most beautiful mountain.

The surname 'Kokavec' is believed to originate from this village.[1]

Before the establishment of independent Czechoslovakia in 1918, Liptovská Kokava was part of Liptó County within the Kingdom of Hungary. From 1939 to 1945, it was part of the Slovak Republic.

Geography

The municipality lies at an altitude of 787 metres (2,582 ft) and covers an area] of 19,881 square metres (214,000 sq ft). It has a population of about 1,054 people.
