Fort Blockhouse

Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8)

Illustration of a key activity of Fort Blockhouse (firing of guns mounted on the parapet) which has taken place regularly since the 17th century but ceased in 2017. Up until 2017 these were the oldest firing guns in the British Royal Navy (source: Navy News Feb. 1998) and as such an image of them in action is of historic and encyclopedic value.

No free image (and few images in general) seem to be available of the firing of gun salutes at Fort Blockhouse, this having always been a closed military site. No such image is likely to be created in future as this activity ceased in this location in 2017; the facility is no longer in military use and is due to be sold in 2025.

It is one of six royal events marked annually with the traditional gun salutes. The custom dates back to the early days of sail when ships visiting foreign ports would discharge their guns before entering, proving they were empty and that the visit was peaceful.
