Etymology

[edit]

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 여러〮 (Yale: yèlé), from pre-Middle Korean *ᄋᆢ라 (Yale: *yòlá), preserved as alternative Middle Korean 여라〮 (Yale: yèlá), as well as Jeju ᄋᆢ라 (yawra), Yukjin Korean 야라 (yara).

Beyond Korean, connected to Japanese (よろず) (yorozu, a large number), which is probably an ancient loan into Japanese.
