Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *ḱeyk- (“belt, strap”). Cognate with Lithuanian šikšnà; also compare Finnish hihna, a Baltic borrowing.

- lokāḥ sapālā yasyeme śvasanti vivaśā vaśe. dvijā iva śicā baddhāḥ sa kāla iha kāraṇam.
- All living beings in all the planets of this universe, including the presiding deities of all the planets, are fully under the control of the Lord. They work like birds caught in a net, who cannot move independently.
- लोकाः सपाला यस्येमे श्वसन्ति विवशा वशे। द्विजा इव शिचा बद्धाः स काल इह कारणम्॥
- c. 700 CE – 900 CE, Bhāgavata Purāṇa 11.7.66:
- सासकृत्स्नेहगुणिता दीनचित्ताजमायया। स्वयं चाबध्यत शिचा बद्धान् पश्यन्त्यपस्मृतिः॥
- sāsakṛtsnehaguṇitā dīnacittājamāyayā. svayaṃ cābadhyata śicā baddhān paśyantyapasmṛtiḥ.
- The lady pigeon had always allowed herself to be bound by the ropes of intense material affection, and thus her mind was overwhelmed by anguish. Being in the grip of the illusory energy of the Lord, she completely forgot herself, and rushing forward to her helpless children, she was immediately bound in the hunter’s net.
- सासकृत्स्नेहगुणिता दीनचित्ताजमायया। स्वयं चाबध्यत शिचा बद्धान् पश्यन्त्यपस्मृतिः॥
- c. 700 CE – 900 CE, Bhāgavata Purāṇa 11.7.71:
- तांस्तथैवावृतान् शिग्भिर्मृत्युग्रस्तान् विचेष्टतः। स्वयं च कृपणः शिक्षु पश्यन्नप्यबुधोऽपतत्॥
- tāṃstathaivāvṛtān śigbhirmṛtyugrastān viceṣṭataḥ. svayaṃ ca kṛpaṇaḥ śikṣu paśyannapyabudhoʼpatat.
- As the father pigeon wretchedly stared at his poor children trapped in the net and on the verge of death, pathetically struggling to free themselves, his mind went blank, and thus he himself fell into the hunter’s net.
- तांस्तथैवावृतान् शिग्भिर्मृत्युग्रस्तान् विचेष्टतः। स्वयं च कृपणः शिक्षु पश्यन्नप्यबुधोऽपतत्॥

- O queens of Suyajña, the male kuliṅga bird, seeing his wife put into the greatest danger in the grip [lit. net] of providence, became very unhappy. Because of affection, the poor bird, being unable to release her, began to lament for his wife.
- सासज्जत शिचस्तन्त्र्यां महिष्यः कालयन्त्रिता। कुलिङ्गस्तां तथापन्नां निरीक्ष्य भृशदुःखितः। स्नेहादकल्पः कृपणः कृपणां पर्यदेवयत्॥
