From the root *էջ- (*ēǰ-, “to come/go down, descend; to stay overnight; to calm down”), probably from Proto-Indo-European *h₁e/oy-gʰ-, +‎ -ան- (-an-). Cognate with Ancient Greek οἴχομαι (oíkhomai, “to go (away), leave, disappear”), οἰχνέω (oikhnéō, “to go, come, walk, approach”), Lithuanian eigà (“course”), Old Irish oegi (“guest”). Armenian demonstrates a semantic shift ‘to go’ → ‘to go down’.
