[edit]Inherited from Old French evangile, evangeile, euvangile, borrowed from Ecclesiastical Latin evangelium, from Ancient Greek εὐαγγέλιον (euangélion, “good news”). Cognate with Italian vangelo, Portuguese evangelho, Spanish evangelio.
