[edit]- Comparison with Lithuanian svar̃stis (“counterweight”) is semantically problematic.
- Perhaps a Baltic word with contamination from Middle High German swert, cf. German Schwert (“sword, blade”).[1]
- Possibly an independent formation, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *swer- (“to ache; injury”) or *seh₂w- (“sharp”), sw-er. Compare Proto-Slavic *svьrdьlъ (“drill”).
