méreg

Hungarian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Of debated origin. Either:[1]
- Borrowed from Alanic. Compare Ossetian марг (marg, “poison”).[2] Further akin to Persian مرگ (marg, “death”).
- From Proto-Finno-Ugric *mirkkɜ (“poison”). Compare Finnish myrkky (“poison”), but this is problematic.[3]
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]méreg (plural mérgek)
- poison, venom, toxin
- Synonym: (literally, ‘toxic material’, only if distinction is needed from the other sense) méreganyag
- (somewhat informal) anger, wrath
- 1651, Miklós Zrínyi, Szigeti veszedelem[1] (The Siege of Sziget),[2] Franklin (1901), canto 15, stanza 85, translated by László Kőrössy:
- Igy tészen Delimán és nagy sebességgel / Bánra rugaszkodik, teli sok méreggel. / Ráveti dárdáját hatalmas erővel, / Itéli, hogy nagy bánt lefekteti evvel.
- Thus does Deliman, and with incredible swiftness / Leaps at the bán, filled with much venom, / Heaves spear at him with mighty strength, / Expects that the great bán will thus die.
