Etymology

From Middle High German trefs, trefse, later trebse and variants, from Proto-Germanic *drab, *dreb, probably related to *drabaz (dregs).[1]

As in Wespe (wasp), forms with -sp- are found chiefly in northern, Low and Central German, varieties; compare Middle Low German drespe. Related to Dutch dravik.
