yobo

[edit]

That was a word used in Korea to describe a woman who was the quasi-wife of a single (although occasionally married) soldier in Korea. The woman was paid a fixed amount (depending on the rank and economy) each month. This gave the soldier a place to sleep off-post, cooking, cleaning and other duties performed by a spouse. Normally these were 1 year contracts, expiring at the term of the soldier's leaving Korea for a new assignment. It was a word imported from Japan where women provide this same service. Yes, I just found this, which is apparently the same sense. I hope someone more knowledgeable can add it.
