I dispute the idea that the -al in burial, arousal, betrothal, arrival etc. is the Romance -al. We don’t see nouns like that in Latin or French at all. I think that it’s actually -els#Old_English/-else#Old_English, which regularly forms nouns from verbs. It may also be somewhat blended with the -el#Old_English that forms tool-names from verbs. —Correctrix (talk) 04:08, 1 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
