Etymology

Borrowed from Portuguese Sciam (Thailand), from Thai สยาม (sà-yǎam, Siam, historical name), from Pali suvaṇṇabhūmi (land of gold) or Sanskrit श्याम (śyāma, dark) or Mon ရာမည (rhmañña, stranger), the same root as Shan and probably Assam.[1]
