[edit]Formally from dick (“thick”) + Bein (“bone, leg”). Probably an alteration by popular etymology of *Diechbein, from obsolete Diech (“thigh”) + Bein. The former from Middle High German diech, from Old High German dioh, from Proto-Germanic *þeuhą.
