Etymology

From Dutch Brussel and French Bruxelles, from Proto-Germanic, composed of the words *brōk (marsh) + *sali (building, room).[1] The metonymic meaning of Brussels as the European Union stems from the fact that the EU headquarters is based in Brussels.
