vaurio
Appearance
Finnish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Coined by Finnish politician, historian and professor Yrjö Sakari Yrjö-Koskinen. May be based on vauras (despite the semantic difference) or be an ex nihilo coinage; in either case, suffixed with + -io.
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]vaurio
- damage (instance of something not being intact)
Usage notes
[edit]Unlike English damage and Finnish vahinko, vaurio is used countably to refer to a single instance of damage. As a result, it is used chiefly of actual, physical damage. Uncountable, collective use is expressed with the plural number.
