Welcome to the 2020 ACM SIGMETRICS Conference on Measurement and Modeling of Computer Systems, originally scheduled to be held at the Integrated Science and Engineering Complex on the campus of Northeastern University in Boston, MA, June 8-12, 2020. The conference is the leading research venue in the area of performance analysis of computer systems, and the development of tools and innovative application of tools towards this end.
In response to the unprecedented impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the SIGMETRICS 2020 Organizing Committee and SIGMETRICS Executive Committee decided on April 9 to cancel the physical meeting and move the conference online. Authors of accepted papers were asked to prepare video presentations for their papers, which are made available in the public domain in early June 2020. A live web session on June 9 and virtual interaction options are provided to enhance the experience of the online conference. In addition, the authors are given the option of presenting their SIGMETRICS work at IFIP Performance 2020, or at ACM SIGMETRICS 2021. Two workshops, Mathematical Performance Modeling and Analysis (MAMA) and Distributed Cloud Computing (DCC), take place online on June 8 concurrently with the conference.
Fundamental Limits of Volume-based Network DoS Attacks
Volume-based network denial-of-service (DoS) attacks refer to a class of cyber attacks where an adversary seeks to block user traffic from service by sending adversarial traffic that reduces the available user capacity. In this paper, we explore the ...
On the Complexity of Traffic Traces and Implications
This paper presents a systematic approach to identify and quantify the types of structures featured by packet traces in communication networks. Our approach leverages an information-theoretic methodology, based on iterative randomization and compression ...
On the Analysis of a Multipartite Entanglement Distribution Switch
We study a quantum switch that distributes maximally entangled multipartite states to sets of users. The entanglement switching process requires two steps: first, each user attempts to generate bipartite entanglement between itself and the switch; and ...
On Time Synchronization Issues in Time-Sensitive Networks with Regulators and Nonideal Clocks
Flow reshaping is used in time-sensitive networks (as in the context of IEEE TSN and IETF Detnet) in order to reduce burstiness inside the network and to support the computation of guaranteed latency bounds. This is performed using per-flow regulators (...
Lancet: Better network resilience by designing for pruned failure sets
Recently, researchers have started exploring the design of route protection schemes that ensure networks can sustain traffic demand without congestion under failures. Existing approaches focus on ensuring worst-case performance over simultaneous f-...
vrfinder: Finding Outbound Addresses in Traceroute
Current methods to analyze the Internet's router-level topology with paths collected using traceroute assume that the source address for each router in the path is either an inbound or off-path address on each router. In this work, we show that outbound ...
Ludo Hashing: Compact, Fast, and Dynamic Key-value Lookups for Practical Network Systems
Key-value lookup engines running in fast memory are crucial components of many networked and distributed systems such as packet forwarding, virtual network functions, content distribution networks, distributed storage, and cloud/edge computing. These ...
