Incorporating accessibility in web interface development for deaf users

Published: 14 December 2021 Publication History

Abstract

Initiatives about developing accessible software are important to support the construction of computational solutions that supply digital services and information for all users, including people with disabilities. Accessibility is a subcharacteristic of usability, which is a fundamental non-functional requirement for the quality of the final software product. Few efforts from the academy and industry have been spent to support developers to create web pages for deaf users. Our work intends to be a step forward in this direction by proposing a tool-supported accessibility recommendations guide. This guide helps developers in their development environment to build accessible software. A systematic, iterative and well-grounded methodology has been used to define the proposed guide. Two empirical studies were conducted to evaluate the usefulness of the guide for developing web pages for deaf users and the ease of use of the built pages. As a result, the proposed guide can contribute to incorporate accessibility in the development of web pages for deaf users, facilitating the understanding of the content available on these pages by this target audience.
