Optimal Placement-aware Trace-Based Scheduling of Hardware Reconfigurations for FPGA Accelerators

Published: 05 April 2009 Publication History

Abstract

Modern use of FPGAs as hardware accelerators involvesthe partial reconfiguration of hardware resources as the applicationexecutes. In this paper, we present a polynomial timealgorithm for scheduling reconfiguration tasks given atrace of actors (invocations of hardware kernels) that is bothprovably optimal and placement-aware. In addition, wewill propose a dependence analysis to determine whetherfor each actor instance, a reconfiguration task is neededprior to its execution in hardware. A case study using theH.264 encoder is presented to compare our algorithmagainst the state-of-the-art heuristics.
