Generating EDI Message Translations from Visual Specifications

Published: 26 November 2001 Publication History

Abstract

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) systems are used inmany domains to support inter-organisationalinformation exchange. To get systems using different EDImessage formats to communicate, complex messagetranslations, where data must be transformed from oneEDI message format into another, are required. Wedescribe a visual language and support environmentwhich greatly simplify the task of the systems integratorby using a domain-specific visual language to expressdata formats and format translations. Complex messagetranslations are automated by an underlyingtransformation engine. We describe the motivation forthis system, its key visual language and transformationengine features, a prototype environment, and experiencetranslating it into a commercial product.
