Visualization and Virtual Reality for Art and Science
Abstract
The National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) has pioneered visualisation and virtual reality since 1986 when artists and scientists began forming "Renaissance Teams" to solve problems in computer graphical representations of supercomputer simulations. As a designer and artist from the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, I co-developed some of the early algorithms for visualization at the Center, collaborated with scientists across many disciplines and focused on scientific visualization as a way of "making the invisible visible." We have pushed the envelope on large-data simulations and representations in areas of atmospheric science and cosmology.
