2023 Journal Citation Report impact factor update and achievements for the Journal of Periodontal & Implant Science
The Journal Impact Factor (JIF) for 2023 was announced last summer for the Journal of Periodontal & Implant Science (JPIS), the official publication of the Korean Academy of Periodontology. JPIS is ranked 52nd among 157 journals in the field of Dentistry, Oral Surgery & Medicine, placing it in the second quartile (Q2) with a JIF of 2.2. Despite fluctuations in its JIF over the past few years—declining from 2.614 in 2020 to 2.086 in 2021 and further to 1.9 in 2022—the recent increase to 2.2 is encouraging. The JIF, when excluding self-citations, stands at 2.1, with only 9 self-citations. This low number underscores the journal’s strong academic reputation and broad international reach, as the majority of citations are from external journals.
The number of journals receiving impact factors has risen significantly, from 91 in 2022 to 157 in 2023. This increase is largely due to the inclusion of journals in the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI). Journals indexed in the ESCI typically have lower impact factors, which may have contributed to an apparent increase in the relative positions of traditional SCIE journals. While a high JIF does not necessarily indicate the quality of a journal, it does reflect the level of interest within the research community. To facilitate a more accurate comparison, the Journal Citation Indicator (JCI) was introduced in 2021. This metric normalizes citations across subject categories, publication years, and document types. A JCI of 1.0 indicates an average citation level. Currently, JPIS has achieved a JCI of 0.91, and we are optimistic that it will exceed the average in the future.
The SCImago Journal & Country Rank (SJR) from Elsevier/Scopus serves as another relevant metric. JPIS holds the 27th position out of 60 (Q2) in the field of Oral Surgery according to the SJR. However, the influence and utilization of the SJR have not yet reached the level of the JIF, which continues to be a prominent metric for institutions and universities.
As members of the editorial board, we recognize the importance of increasing our journal’s impact factor. This metric not only reflects the growing number of citations but also indicates heightened academic interest in our publication. While it is essential not to focus solely on the impact factor, publishing research that engages the scientific community is indeed rewarding. At JPIS, we are committed to the timely publication of accepted manuscripts, assigning digital object identifiers, and ensuring early indexing in PubMed. We deeply appreciate the researchers who have contributed outstanding research to JPIS and encourage them to continue submitting their exceptional work.
