Population research is an evergreen topic of interest for governments across the world and accurate measurement of the demographic, environmental, and economic variables associated with a region’s population is invaluable in terms of informing governmental decision-making, planning, and policy. As technology improves the assessment and analysis of large census datasets, demography researchers are certain to uncover fresh revelations in this field.
According to Clarivate’s Web of Science, less than half of the published research on demography in the past five years has been open access and, since our mission at MDPI is to foster open scientific exchange across all disciplines, this came to be but one of the reasons we decided to launch Populations—to promote open research within the discipline of demography and population studies.
Populations (ISSN 3042-4372) [1] will be an international, peer-reviewed, open access journal on population studies published quarterly online by MDPI. The journal will bring together scientists from varied backgrounds to share their ideas on contemporary population-related issues. In addition to population researchers, our target audience includes sociologists, anthropologists, economists, biologists, geographers, and government researchers, as well as anyone interested in staying up to date with the latest advancements in population science. We will publish regular papers and review articles, and all submissions will undergo a rigorous yet rapid peer review process managed by our capable editorial staff.
We are pleased that Prof. Dr. David Lopez-Carr from the University of California, USA, has agreed to come on board as the Editor-in-Chief and assume leadership of the journal. We look forward to fruitful collaboration with him and the still-growing Editorial Board.
