Bridging Gaps: Uncovering Cultural and Healthcare Barriers to Maternal Health in Rural Communities of the Global South: a Qualitative Study

Published: 06 November 2024 Publication History

Abstract

Maternal mortality remains a significant issue in rural communities of Nigeria, influenced by healthcare practices, cultural beliefs, and communication gaps during antenatal care. This research seeks to uncover the root causes of maternal deaths and develop culturally informed and targeted interventions. The initial proposed solution was a mobile app prototype with multilingual educational content to assist caregivers and health practitioners in educating pregnant women on the benefits of good nutrition during pregnancy. Due to notable limitations that came with this solution, the research pivoted to a more human-centered, qualitative approach, exploring different perspectives of participants including, healthcare providers, pregnant women, and nursing mothers in various rural hospitals. Initial findings and observations from data collected reveal how cultural misconceptions about nutrition and poor communication hinder maternal health. This article emphasizes the need for culturally sensitive interventions to improve maternal care.
