A Miniaturized Dual U-shaped Patch Antenna for WiFi-6E Applications

Abstract

A miniaturized dual U-shaped patch antenna for WiFi-6E applications is designed and fabricated, with a size of 21.5×10×1.0 mm3. The antenna adopts a pair of U-shaped patches to minimize the length of the oscillator, which can be understood as the combination of two symmetrical variant dipole. One U-shaped patch serves as the feed source and the other serves as the ground plane. Furthermore, a slot is etched in the U-shaped oscillator, and the SMA connector is set into the inner of the slot for size reduction. Simulation and actual measurement results indicate that, the antenna works at 4.9-7.2 GHz (|S11|<-10 dB), covering the high-frequency section of WiFi-6E (5.15-5.985, 5.925-7.125 GHz), with 41.82% bandwidth and all measured peakgains are beyond 2.5 dBi. Meanwhile, the antenna exhibits stable omnidirectional radiation characteristics, with radiation efficiency is more than 65%. Due to its small size, low manufacturing cost, high gain and planar design, the antenna is easily installed in compact handheld devices, and can provide stable and fast transmission for WiFi-6E applications.
