Multi-Objective Combined Economic Emission Dispatch using Modified Firefly Algorithm: A Case Study of India

Published: 30 May 2024 Publication History

Abstract

Economic load dispatch is seen as an important strategy by system planners to improve the energy efficiency. This becomes particularly relevant when renewable energy based generation is integrated into the system. The optimal dispatch planning necessitates implementation of an efficient optimization technique. This paper proposes a novel modified-firefly algorithm (MFA) to address the Combined Economic Emission Dispatch (CEED) problem, in order to aid the integration of renewable energy resources (RES) into the grid optimally. The proposed MFA is based on the hybridization of butterfly algorithm with conventional firefly algorithm. The MFA is tested on five different test systems considering each source individually and then the combination of all the sources. As a case study, the data for solar irradiance and wind speed has been considered for east coast of India. The results are analyzed to show the effect of RES integration on emission dispatch and cost reduction of the system. Also, the effect of non-linear constraints is shown on IEEE 30-bus system. The efficacy of MFA is compared with conventional firefly algorithm (FA) in terms of search capability for global optima. The results demonstrate that MFA offers improved solutions as compared to conventional FA for all the five test cases. The results indicate a total cost saving of approximately 8% as compared to the conventional FA.
