Demo: Underwater communication on smartphones and smartwatches

Abstract

In this WUWNET demo, we present the demo of our SIGCOMM 2022 paper on an underwater messaging system for commodity smartphones and smart watches. Our solution uses the speakers and microphones ubiquitous on today’s mobile devices to establish an acoustic communication link underwater using only a software app. To do this, we built a real-time system that adapts to differences in the frequency response of different speakers and microphones on mobile devices, multipath and noise level variation in different environments, and dynamic changes in channel response caused by mobility inherent to underwater activities. In our demo, WUWNET attendees will be able to try our system in a water tank on several smartphones and smartwatches in a waterproof pouch. We will also provide link to the open source Android software app of our system to attendees who are interested in installing the system on their own mobile devices.
