Stress management training in athletes: Design considerations for VR biofeedback systems

Abstract

Stress is a reaction of the body to external challenges, whether physical or psychological. In sports, there are stressors that affect the athlete’s performance. Lack of mechanisms for stress regulation can be detrimental to athletes’ individual and collective performance. Biofeedback systems have shown promising clinical results in stress regulation of athletes for sport competitions. In this article, we present the design process of VANS, a virtual reality biofeedback system that supports stress management training in athletes. The results of this study provide a set of design considerations for the development of biofeedback systems for athletes.
