Operating room & surgeons: Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders

Abstract

Objective: This article is intended to be an updated framework of current state of ergonomics and ergonomic considerations in surgery, being a systematic review and a qualitative research of the latest reviewed documentation published on this matter.
Background: Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WRMDs) appeared among surgeons as a result of the practice of their profession. Despite the growing interest in this matter, it is still an underdeveloped topic, which requires further research. Postural control, the workplace ergonomics, the improvement of the equipment, or the training, are elements that still need to be enhanced to avoid, or at least limit, the pathologies that may be developed due to the practice of surgery.
Methods: Different researches have been carried out to obtain the knowledge base. For this, a search array has been developed based in the main keywords in this field: “surgery”, “ergonomics” or “musculoskeletal disorders”, in the main scientific free search engine PUBMED (Medline). The selection criteria has been based on articles in English language published no longer than 5 years ago, that is, from May 2016. All the references presented in this document have been read and reviewed in detail. The PRISMA methodology has been used to present the results.
Results: From the search carried out, 13 articles have been selected, 8 reviews and 5 specific studies, which present the main physical symptoms suffered by surgeons during an operation, neck, back and shoulder most commonly mentioned as the main affected areas for pain, discomfort or injuries in most of the surgery typologies.
Conclusion: Despite the diseases associated with their activity, surgeons are not prone to treat their pathologies with a specialist. Preventive actions, such as training, microbreaks during surgery, or ergonomic improvement of the position, are considered vital to enhance the working conditions of the surgeon and his team. Additionally, the development of the equipment in the operating room could meet the growing demand of enhancements in the surgical field.
